Great Beauty Products at Your Local Drugstore

Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar ($3.99 for a 4.5 ounce bar)

My, normally, oily skin recently became extremely dry and sensitive after a severe allergic reaction to another product. Not knowing what to do, I decided to head to my local drugstore and I scanned the shelves looking for a solution. I bought Cetaphil’s bar soap and the Moisturizing Cream (reviewed below). The soap forms a creamy lather and is extremely gentle; it leaves skin clean, yet moisturized. The masking fragrance in this soap is pleasant and not at all overwhelming.

How to Lock Your Zippers

October 3, 2004 01:22 PM | Comments (1) | Posted in Advice

I just learned a new trick, well, at least new for me, regarding zippers from my friend Malinda. Malinda and I have been best friends for 20 years—she was the maid of honor at my wedding and the only person I know daring enough to have a conversation with the Falun Gong folks wearing a Vivienne Tam Chairman Mao shirt. So when she headed for my crotch and zipped up my pants—I wasn’t offended. In fact, when she showed me that pulling the little zipper handle down locks the zipper in place, thus reducing the likelihood for future crotch treks on my behalf, I was elated. Not only are my ...

Jane Magazine has Jumped the Shark

October 1, 2004 01:16 PM | Comments (2) | Posted in

It is official, Jane Magazine has “jumped the shark”. The magazine that, prior to August 2004, I would give up my low fat mocha latte to purchase, has fallen victim to silly advertorials, uninspiring celebrity interviews, and a column by Pam Anderson. They even changed their email extension from @janemag.com to @fairchildpub.com—a sure sign it is swimming with the sharks.

When I first received the “new” Jane, I thought it was only for the September issue (Fall issues are the big moneymakers in terms of ad sales). I gave Jane and the gang a “get-out-of-corniness-free-pass” because ...

Murses: Purses for Men

September 28, 2004 05:37 PM | Comments (0) | Posted in Fashion+BeautyAustraliaCanada

“Why are there no accessories for men?” a very close male friend asked one day over brunch.

I tried to point out to him that men have ties, cuff links, watches, and if you from Queens, gold chains. As I started to explain the power of gold chains, especially when nestled against a hairy chest, I realized that my friend was right—there are few accessory options for men. Especially men who are bound by the confines of heterosexuality.

Ties have become more fun and varied in the past couple of years, but ascots, a very stylish alternative to the traditional tie, has yet to rise to ...

Dear Lord & Taylor-

If you are going to have a private sale, don’t send an invite to me because I will tell everyone. I have a hard time keeping a secret when it comes to sales.

Sincerely,

The Budget Fashionista

If you live near a Lord & Taylor, head to their website to register for e-mail coupons. Every week I get fabulous coupons from the forgotten department store—offering discounts like an additional 20% sale merchandise or $25 off purchases of $100 or more.

Now, I know you are probably like L&T?? Isn’t that the department store for the nursing home set? Well, I have found ...

Are Outlet Shopping Malls the Holiday Inn of the Millennum?

September 26, 2004 05:34 PM | Comments (0) | Posted in Spanish

Road trips are the quintessential summer adventure. As a kid, each summer my family would pile into the Chevy Cavalier and take road trips to exciting places like Topeka, Kansas and Jonesboro, Arkansas. No matter where we were going, there was always a Holiday Inn at the next exit. Twenty years later, on my own road trips, I have noticed that Outlet Malls have started to spring up along the roads of America. The New Jersey Turnpike, between Exit 6 (PA Turnpike) and Exit 18 (George Washington Bridge) boasts at least four Outlet Malls, including the mammoth Jersey Garden Mall. Signs for ...

P.S. More on Designer Knock-Offs (aka The Fake Debate)

September 23, 2004 11:42 PM | Comments (0) | Posted in Fashion+BeautyAustraliaCanada

Even Harper’s Bazaar, a magazine that I love, has a page in September’s issue called “Smart Shopping—Best Buys for Every Budget”. Here are the items listed on the page:

DKNY jacket—$425

Kulson Vest—$430

Coach pump—$196 (the cheapest item)

Miu Miu bag—$545

Tory by TRB top—$775

Patricia Underwood Hat—$220

Exactly whose budget are they talking about? Paris Hilton’s? Oprah’s?

Bazaar, a magazine known for glamour and high brow taste, should be embarrassed to even try to wax poetic on anything dealing with the term “budget.”  Magazines like Bazaar and Vogue are not—and should never ...

Designers and Their New Budget Fashion Lines

September 23, 2004 03:18 PM | Comments (7) | Posted in AustraliaCanadaDeustchSpanish

Back when I started thebudgetfashionista.com in early 2003, tons of sites focused on various aspects of being fashionable, but not on being both fashionable and on a budget. Fast forward two years and now everyone is talking about budget shopping and looking fabulous for less, giving the same old tired budget tips while wearing $500 shoes.

For example, Rebecca contacted me early one morning, virtually screaming on the phone. Apparently, a very popular website that never discusses budget shopping, was on a local morning show discussing budget shopping. To add insult to injury, the head ...

Christmas Shopping in October at Macy’s

September 22, 2004 06:12 PM | Comments (4) | Posted in CanadaDeustchSpanish

Last week my new friend Cate and I went shopping around Herald Square (NYC). After spending two hours in H&M looking for “something in the color green,” we headed out into the damp New York streets. Everything was Tokay, until Cate suddenly stopped and shrieked “Please tell me that is not Christmas lights and a Santa Claus display on Macy’s.” Upon examining the 50-foot light display, I replied “Yes, Cate. There is a Santa Claus.  Apparently he has set up shop at Macy’s in September.”

So flash forward to this weekend in Minneapolis. I walked by a very well known drug store chain and ...
