New York Fashion Week: All Good Things Must Come to an End: Day Eight at Fashion Week

February 13, 2005 03:39 AM | Comments (0) | Posted in Fashion+BeautyAustraliaCanada

It’s the end of NYC fashion week. No more shows. No more parties. No more Robert Verdi goodie bags. Oh well. Fashion week is sort of like going on a vacation—it’s fun, but you really can’t wait to get home.

Some of the shows . . .  Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Derek Lam, and Puffy’s new BFF (best friend forever), Zac Posen.

The week ended with the J.Lo show, which was this big, MTV production filled with clothing you can get at Macy’s. The theme was the three stages of J.Lo’s life—Jenny from the block, young star, and the red carpet. The set-up was so confusing (the normally straight ...

New York Fashion Week: Day Seven at NYC Fashion Week

February 11, 2005 04:26 PM | | Posted in Fashion+BeautyAustraliaCanada

It’s day seven at fashion week and the fun and festivities are almost over. Somehow I found myself in the front row of the Jeffrey Chow, three seats always from Carson Kressely (the funny one from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy) and some snotty writer for what I think was British Vogue who kept crossing his legs to the chagrin of the photographers. The most interesting part of being so close to the runway was that I was able to see the models struggle to walk down the runway in their 4-inch Christian Louboutin heels. We are not alone.

Trends: Fashionista’s worldwide can let out a sigh ...

New York Fashion Week Fall 2005: Hot Dogs Inspire Fashion—Day Six at Fashion Week

February 10, 2005 12:10 PM | | Posted in Fashion+BeautyAustraliaCanada

It is day six at fashion week and I’ve had enough Splenda cupcakes to ensure the development of some sort of strange cancer only present in lab mice.

Trends: I can’t help but to wonder if hot dogs are the major inspiration behind this fall’s color scheme. The color trend seems to definitely be towards mustard, brown and ketchup-colored clothing.  Somewhere in NYC, there is a hot vendor who is a creative consultant to Marc Jacobs.

How to Get into New York Fashion Week—Day Five at Fashion Week

February 9, 2005 12:09 PM | Comments (1) | Posted in Fashion+Beauty

I’ve received tons of e-mails from people who want to get inside the tents, but have no press passes or invites. I am reluctant to give out any tips to these folks, because it seems that they only want to attend to “celeb spot”, rather than actually bask fashion glory. Fashion shows last only 15 minutes, people push in line and get edgy like at a basketball game. Imagine 2,000 people trying to exit and re-enter a basketball game every 15-20 minutes. My advice—If you want to celeb spot tune into VH1. There are enough wanna-bes and frelebrities (free loaders who really want to be ...

New York Fashion Week: Mucus and Malandrino—Day Four at Fashion Week

February 8, 2005 12:18 PM | | Posted in Fashion+BeautyAustraliaCanada

Day four at fashion week found the tents full of designers and the Budget Fashionista full of mucus. I felt so sick and run down, that I decided to skip to the day’s festivities (I had no energy to fight for Bobby Verdi’s leftovers) and stayed right in my bed.

So, this is what I think happened yesterday . . . enough fur to cover Amanda Lepore’s rather large fake breasts, some baggy menswear styled trousers in pinstripes, glen paid or tweed, and finally some color! Check out the following designers who presented during day four: BCBG Max Azria—one of my favorites, Oscar de la Renta,

New York Fashion Week: The Battle for the Goody Bag—Day Three at Fashion Week

February 7, 2005 12:27 AM | Comments (0) | Posted in Fashion+BeautyAustraliaCanada

Day three of fashion week is over and I am going to need a lot more than free rum drinks and sugar free cupcakes to pull me through the next five days.

Our day kicked off with the 11 a.m. Tracy Reese Show, where we were “replaced” from our section B seats to the dreaded section E—which is way up front near the entrance to the catwalk. So, being the bold Budget Fashionista that I am, I picked up my goody bag and move to my original seats in the 4th row of section B.

You might ask yourself, why should I care? Well at Fashion Week, seat assignments are everything. Where you are seated ...

Wool and Splenda: Day Two at New York City Fashion Week

February 6, 2005 01:00 AM | | Posted in Fashion+BeautyAustraliaCanada

It’s day two of fashion week and I already feel like staying home and watching reruns of “Desperate Housewives”. Although I love the folks on Wisteria Lane, I love fashion just a little bit more.

Today has been interesting . . . the most interesting part is that I had better seats than Nigel Barker, the photographer from America’s Next Top Model, at the Richard Chai Show. Another high point was stealing Robert Verdi‘s left over goodie bag at a show, which had all sorts of goodies that those of us sitting in the 3rd row never get—like a bottle of Eco Domani Pinot Grino. Thanks Robert. ...

New York Fashion Week Here I Come!

February 5, 2005 12:33 AM | | Posted in Fashion+BeautyAustraliaCanada

This week, I will be filing reports from the tents of Fashion Week. For those of you who have no clue what I am talking about, Fashion Week NYC is the week where designers who can get someone to front them $50,000 bucks display their collections for the next season. It seems like every city has a fashion week (LA, Miami, Milan, Paris) but New York continues to be a favorite for fashionistas and fashion lovers alike.

Style vs. Substance: David Weinberger on Fake Louis Vuitton Handbags

February 2, 2005 02:10 PM | | Posted in Fashion+BeautyAustraliaCanada

What’s the ugliest bag you’ve ever seen? Close your eyes, I’ll remind you. Start with an unfashionable color, add a poorly executed two-letter-combination logo and top if off with some flowers that look like clip art. Can you picture it? Need another hint? It’s also the bag on the top of your wish list.

Ugg Boots: Readers Respond to the Future of Uggs

January 31, 2005 12:29 PM | | Posted in Fashion+Beauty

The emails have been pouring in response to Alyssa Wodtke’s essay on the demise of the Ugg. The comments tend to have a distinct West Coast vs. East Coast vibe—with a majority of folks from the West still loving the Uggs and a majority of folks from the East wishing that they would fall off the face of the earth. I find this to be interesting because you would think Easterners would love Uggs because they are both comfortable and warm. Maybe West Coast folks love them so much because they don’t HAVE to wear boots. It’s like your parents said the time you came home with your first pair ...
