We all know who the trend-setters for the 25 and under set are, but what I really want to know, mature fashionistas, is who are the style icons you have been inspired/influenced by, past or present? And what makes them so inspirational?

My own style "icon" is Jackie O with a tiny smidge of Sarah Jessica Parker.

Jackie was always the embodiment of sleek, classic, good taste. I saw an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art about her clothes. Everything had clean lines with few, if any, frills and froufrou. A lot of the clothes could still be worn today and they would just look timeless. I also saw a photo of her wearing a wool dress by Oleg Cassini, and I think that one day, when I have the time and money, I'm going to have that dress made for me. In fact, I do have a cute jacket that reminds me of her (I got it on clearance for $14.99 at JCPenney).

SJP taught women to take chances and have fun with clothes and find their own style. Plus, she carries everything with so much confidence. I don't always like what she wears, but that's the point: what matters is that it makes you look and feel your best.

When I wear a plain neutral top and skirt (reminding me of Jackie), I love to add a fun pair of earrings or some other fun accessory (reminding me of SJP).

Machazait, I totally agree that Jackie O's style resonates today, even in some the more trendy styles that are always cycling through (like the short, big-buttoned swing jackets we saw this spring). Have been hearing folks note that Michelle Obama's style is reminiscent/influenced by Jackie O, which I find interesting as well . . .

Audrey Hepburn. She dressed so perfectly for her body shape with a classic look that was neither trendy nor out of style.

Audrey was just gorgeous and so stylish all the time. I think it was her friend and couturier, Givenchy, who said "Is there a woman who wouldn't want to look like Audrey?" So true.

I've heard that too, and I think they're right.

Another style icon for mature fashionistas- Sharon Stone. I love the way she pushes the envelope and never looks old. I don't like everything she wears (I've seen photos of her in outfits that look way too over-the-top), but a lot of what she wears is so tastefully sexy, and she carries it with so much confidence.

My favorite style icon is split!! Love Audrey H. and top of my list is Grace Kelly. I am such a girl. I like to be treated like a lady. And I dress myself to express that expectation. I will indulge in a trendy what-not ever so often so I don't come of as some weierdo stuck in the ast century.

There are so many ! Iman, Dianne Sawyer, Angelica Houston, Oprah...I could go on and on. The great thing about all these women is that they are so stylish and comfortable. They exude confidence in whatever they are wearing. It is obvious that they are done "experimenting" : they understand what looks good and they understand fit.
