I’ve never really understood the function of double-breasted coats. In terms of body type, how are they more favourable than single-breasted coats? Do they provide more support for the waist, etc?

Sorry, but double-breasted coats and jackets are not more favorable than single-breasted. Double-breasted adds an extra layer right on the midsection, and the two lines of buttons look like they are making room for a tummy. Large-busted women also do not need the extra bulk. Single-breasted gives one long line of buttons that obscures any girth in the midsection, and it doesn’t add any extra bulk.

Having said all of that, double-breasted coats do have one extra function- warmth and protection from the elements. As I read it, when Burberry first made the coats for the British soldiers in WWI, those coats were double-breasted to provide extra protection from wind, rain, and more. Those coats were worn in the trenches, hence the term “trench coat.”
