No matter what your style, size, or occupation, there’s always one rule when shopping for new clothes.  It’s one that I’ve had to learn the hard way (being the Budget Fashionista that I am, it’s so hard to turn down a good deal sometimes!), but it’s never led me to make the wrong decision.  It’s something my aunt, a classically beautiful Budget Fashionista herself, had to drum into my head many times before it stuck, so here I am to pass it on:

No matter how inexpensive it costs, no matter how great the sale, no matter who the designer--if it doesn’t fit, don’t buy it.

You may be thinking, “Well, duh!  Of course I’m not going to buy it if it doesn’t fit! Who do you think I am, an amateur BFA?” (my abbreviation for Budget Fashionista)

And I say, no, no, girlfriend.  You are not an amateur by any means.  But let’s face it: we’ve all been there.  Those jeans that say they’re your size on the tag, but once you put them on you can totally feel that chocolate mousse you had at that fabulous new French restaurant this past weekend.  And they only cost $40!  Surely you’ll loss those extra five pounds in no time, might as well get the jeans, right?  Or the Diane Von Furstenberg dress that is a tad droopy in the waist that’s just been put on the Clearance rack--nothing the perfect belt won’t fix, right???  Wrong.  Well, usually wrong.  There are always exceptions to every rule, but in general these purchases are more likely to stay hanging in your closet, unworn, looking fabulous all by their lonesome than with you in them.  So the next time you feel the urge to splurge on that size 7 1/2 shoe when you usually wear a size 8, remember my aunt’s wise advice--and buy yourself some fat-free chocolate mousse instead!

That is great advice, mamarthaca! I’ve bought items that didn’t quite fit far too many times! Sometimes a low price is tempting, but if it doesn’t fit, it is definitely not worth it!

It’s not just fit. It’s also flattery, both of your body shape and personal style. A piece is never a bargain if it doesn’t suit you, no matter how cheap it is.

Case in point: a family friend of ours gave my mom a skirt. The skirt was charcoal gray wool with a lining, of excellent quality. It didn’t fit the friend, and it didn’t fit my mom, so Mom gave it to me. Well, it fit me, but that was the only good thing (other than the quality and the price). The shape and style truncated my legs and made my hips look big. Plus, it was NOT my style. In the end, my mom got rid of it, but it was hard for her because the skirt was wool, lined, and free. But it just wasn’t a good bargain.
