I’ve found that I save a lot of money if I don’t get personally invested in any given item. In other words, I can always put it back on the rack and walk out the door. If I’m lukewarm on something, then I probably shouldn’t buy it.

If I feel I really want to buy something then I’ll spring for some accessories instead. Better to have another scarf, earrings or pin than a shirt I’ll only use twice.

I know how you feel.  If I’m not sure about something, I’ll put it back and if I’m still thinking about it later I’ll go back and get it.  I have to be really careful that
whatever I’m looking at will go with at least two things in my closet.

Absolutely! Sometimes it’s more difficult than others, especially when I’m desperately looking for a particular item, and I need it quick—then I might settle for something I’ll later regret (working on that!). Mostly, however, I’ve found that a little discipline goes a long way to saving my budget—if I’m not completely in love with it, back on the rack it goes—that’s my mantra. Ninety-nine percent of the time, I’m relieved later that I had the good sense to leave it behind. That other 1 percent? Well, if I’m still obsessing over it the next day, and I can afford it without going hungry, I’ll go back.

I completely agree. I look at some of the things in my closet and wonder what I was thinking that day. Now I make sure I am absolutely positive that I want an item. If I can easily put it back and not think about it later, then I know I don’t REALLY want it. I have this whole huge formula in my head consisting of things like: is it worth the price, is it something I’m dying for, can I pull it off, will it go with anything else in my closet, is it more of a “wait for the sale” item, etc. I’ve found that I will simply adore some really cute pieces that I just cannot pull off. They just don’t fit with my style or anything else in my closet.

Hi Everyone!
Yes, I’m glad others just put things back. In fact, it’s not unusual for me to go through things and put them on the rack.
Well, I love accessories. The other day I couldn’t find anything at TJ Maxx, so I just bought another scarf. I have a 20-year stash of them in one of those 3-drawer plastic storage dressers.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that my girlfriend Naomi Goodsir in Sydney is starting an accessories line. She originally did couture hats for many of the big fashion houses in Paris, before going back to Sydney. I’m looking forward to seeing her designs, and can’t wait to share them with you.  She’s taken down her website that was exclusively hats, but you should be able to google her on something else. Her new company will be named, “Goodsir.”

Why settle for one discount when you can get a lot of them !

My strategy is something like this: Either I need it or I want it, but if it isn’t screaming out “buy me, buy me,” then I pass. So far, I’ve bought only things that beg me to buy them, and I’ve gotten my money’s worth. As for the things that aren’t begging me to buy them, I have no regrets about letting them pass.

I really need to get to that point.  Last year I bought 2 shirts and a skirt (I am not a skirt or dress lady) that have done nothing but hang in my closet.  No! make that 3 shirts and 2 skirts.  Anyhow, I try to bring myself to wear them but it is like I have nothing to wear with them.  I think my problem is I buy things but have nothing to wear with it; or to accessorize.  I have a lot of learning to do.

It’s a learning process for everyone!  Don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it.
I think even people that have $$$ to spend don’t like having things in the closet that go unworn.  What’s the fun in that?

I think there are too many people, $$$ or no, who have too many things in their closet that they don’t wear.

Everyone has to learn how to shop successfully. And the first thing everyone needs to do is shop their own closets. See what you have and what needs to go. It’ll make shopping much easier.
