Every new year we have the best intentions, and at the end of every year we’re declaring how much better we’ll do this time around—but after a truly rough year economically most of us will have to get serious about those financial resolutions. So what are you resolving to change to improve your finances this time around? Personally, I’ve managed to get through the holiday shopping without using credit, so though the pickings are more slim this time around, there won’t be any credit card bills to great me after Jan. 1 . . .

I didn’t make through without the card - but I used our debit more and I deducted the money I charged, so the payment due TOMORROW and in January will be paid in full.

It is funny you asked this question, my husband and I just sat down to talk about how he has to coordinate spending better with me and vice versa.  We want to write down everything we want or need and then PLAN for it - give it a date to buy.  He has a hard time with this which then makes it hard for me to manage our finances -especially if something unexpected happens.

But I can’t complain- we are very lucky and blessed and still employed !

2008 was the year that my husband and I really got serious about our finances.  We started tracking our accounts last January on a spreadsheet we review together weekly and we made a lot of spending cuts.  However, we also found a lot of ways to do things better for cheaper and to just have more fun for free or very cheap.  That way we don’t feel deprived.  In fact, we got so into frugality that we even created a frugality wiki site, FruWiki.com.

This year, we hope to keep up the good work while still trying to waste less, spend less, and drive down our debt just as quickly as possible while still keeping a large emergency fund.

In the near future we have a few things that we are doing to cut costs:
* Changing our phone service to another company.
* Changing our life insurance policy.
* Changing our car insurance company.
* Finishing our home renovations just enough that we can refinance our mortgage at a new low rate.

I’d love to keep our utility bills low and try to reduce our grocery bill.  The grocery bill can be hard to cut since it’s already pretty low and I’m not willing to compromise on fresh foods.  However, I’m already planning my spring garden, one of our two hens has just started laying eggs, and I hope that we’ll be able to hit more farmers’ markets this year.

As it stands right now, 2009 has the potential to be our cheapest year together yet —*knock on wood*.

mmmeg, thank you so much for the website !!! This is right up my alley - and it must be a good omen for me that you left it on Jan. 1 !!!! It is a great start.

I would like to ask, if you don’t mind, how you and your husband coordinated it all. That is the biggest obstacle for me. My husband is frugal and mindful - as am I - but we are not good at coordinating it. How did you guys approach it ?

Hi lulu2!  I’m so glad you like the site!  I know what you mean about “coordinating it”.  It took my husband and I about 6 years to get our act together despite wanting to save money—though we plead being young and foolish back then ;)

Tracking and reviewing our account balances together weekly on a spreadsheet has really helped us.  We fill in how much we owe to whom, how much we have in various accounts, and then also figure out how things are changing from week to week, from month to month, and since we started the spreadsheet.  Even though we don’t keep track of all our individual purchases (as some people do), it’s really easy to tell how we’re doing.  My husband and I actually look forward to “doing the numbers” since it’s nice to see the positive effects that our spending cuts have made.

Of course, it wouldn’t work if it wasn’t something that we did together.  However, having a spreadsheet laid out like that makes it easy for us to communicate because it’s easier to know where we are and even where we want to go—and what’s reasonable.  Just telling each other “we need to cut back” never worked for us.

Another thing we’ve started doing recently has been updating a new spreadsheet that has our regular month expenses on it such as insurance, our mortgage, average utility bills, etc.  We update it as things change, so maybe once a month or so right now, and we keep archives of older versions for comparison.

It’s not a budget, per se.  We actually don’t add in things like random purchases like clothes (though those things come out of an “allowance” we each get).  This spreadsheet is more for things that we’re obligated to pay monthly.  However, since starting it we’ve managed to reduce our obligations significantly.  The really useful part of the spreadsheet is that we can play with the numbers and see how much we’d save monthly if cut back here or there.  When you can play with several numbers at once, you can really see how saving small amounts in multiple places really adds up.

Anyhow, I hope that helps!  I don’t know if something like our spreadsheets would work for you, but I do recommend giving it a try if you haven’t tried it before.  And please, let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to know!

mmmeg - THANK YOU. That is very helpful!

As I was reading your advice, it dawned on me that I was trying to control things beyond my control, the times that my husband and I are off without each other. What we need to do is PLAN together. I handle all the finances, I budget, and put together purchasing lists, but I realized after you wrote that he really doesn’t have a good grasp on it.  Poor guy, I wanted him to execute the plan without ever really involving him in it.

So for the New Year, we will review everything once a week and actually do a plan together.

So mmmeg, not only was it great financial advice, it turned out to be great marriage/partner advice   : )

Have a wonderful and abundant New Year !!!!!!!!!!!

Thank YOU, lulu2!  Your message really made my day.  I’m so glad that I could help.

I hope you have a fantastic New Year! It sounds like you’re definitely on the right track—which is really great since since money can be such a sore spot in marriages.

Please let me know how it goes!
