Has anyone tried Cindy Crawford’s skin care line? If so does it work and does it do what the informercial says it will.

Just have to know because I am slowly being seduced by late night viewing (insomnia/menopause - yuck!) and was close to buying it the other night.  But, because of the Recession, I don’t want to spend good money on something that does not work!

Here is how I look at it : though I love Cindy Crawford, she lost a lot of credibility with me when it became public that she has been seeing an international plastic surgeon or specialty dermatologist since she was 28 or 29. She’s had a lot of procedures done over the last 15 years.  Though to be fair to Cindy, I don’t think that any of the procedures were surgical, but there was some really high maintenance and modern technology that wasn’t even available in the US at the time.  Cindy, because of her profession, also had the foresight of preventative measures at a very young age : no sun, no tanning, moisturizing, etc. I learned all that a bit late, like many women. So I can’t take those claims very seriously.

And remember, repeating something over and over to people who are somehow vulnerable (hello, insomnia and menopause ! ), is how people are brainwashed !!!  DON"T DO IT   :  )  Give up the infomercials !

Additionally, after lots and lots of research, even Consumer Reports finds that ROC, Olay Regenerist and Avon’s Anew are the best skincare products out there. The heftier prices don’t mean better product - and I have tried them all ( except Cindy’s).  Many times the active ingredients are exactly the same.

I have done the really expensive routine and now ( just in time for the recession ) I have eased into a much cheaper and equally good -if not better - routine. I am 44 and I finally have it down ( for now ) after ALOT of experimenting.

I wear sunscreen every day : on my face, neck, and back of my hands. I use Neutrogena face cream with SPF 30. In the summer,  I move to a physical block too - Blue Lizard is great or LaRoche Posay ( which is expensive ). I also moisturize year round with Clinique’s dramatically different lotion ( also expensive, but it really works for me ), the whole Clinique system didn’t work for me. The soap and toner were too drying for my jowls and cheeks. Otherwise, I am a drugstore girl - I wash with Noxema and as follows :

I use Roc retinol eye cream, Roc retinol night cream. And my biggest discovery : I used to use Murad glycolic acid and Paul Thomas Roth skin lightner on some some sunspots on my face and hand : to the tune of $100. Well, I found that Esoterica cream has the same acitve ingredient ! You can buy it at any drug store. I have been using it twice a day for about 3 weeks now, just on my sun spots and they are already fading ! And a jar costs about $7.00 and will last a life time.

I also make a sugar paste to exfoliate and in the winter I put a little olive or sweet almond oil in the mix because my jowls and cheeks get so dry.

This is what works for me - I have no idea if it will work for others. All I can say is that I get compliments on my skin - don’t know if I look my age or not, but my skin looks good and this allows me to not wear much make-up. Finally, whatever you do try, it takes a least 3-4 months, sometimes 6 months to really see if it works - and most returns are for only 30 days - except Target. They will take anything back up to 90 days. So this gives you a really good window of time to try out the drugstore brands they sell.

I would also recommend that you go to www.allure.com and see the reader’s choice awards for products. Very few are fancy or expensive and most of the respondents have been using the products for years ( unlike many magazine reviewers who try it for a couple of weeks before the article is due. )

Anyway, I am sure you are beautiful…...don’t get distracted by the hot flashes or Cindy !

Hey Lulu - thanks for your advice as well as letting me know about the products that work for you!  I am an aesthetician but while in the throes of hot flashes and menopausal insomnia, I was considering buying her stuff. It isn’t that what I am using now isn’t working , I guess I just wanted to look as young as Cindy - lol.  For myself, I use Nux Cleansing Lotion only in the evening pat on Boots No. 7 Renew Serum and Lush’s Skin Nanny for night time moisture.  For daytime, I merely rinse with warm water, pat dry,and Lush’s Paradise Regained (it has natural spf which doesn’t turn your face whiter than white!), before applying That Girl primer from Benefit, eye liner, mascara, a neutral shadow, and lipstick.

However, I did have the nicest compliment yesterday when I was trying out a photo facial at a spa school.  The tech doing it said my skin was in excellent condition and when I told him how old I was, he was a little surprised, but did offer his advice about Botox and Rejuvederm (too expensive for me anyway) but not until I was in my 50’s.

But your advice was helpful and when I am back to work, I will try Roc.  Thank you! :)

Hi Sugar Mama,
I am quite embarrassed, here I went on and on and you are a pro !!!!!  Forgive me   : )

Many years ago, I saw a “beauty” expert on tv that said every woman should start at a young age to put a little money aside so that they could do some “procedures” later in life. Well, I did that. But then I couldn’t spend the money on A WRINKLE !  ( It’s in my 2 kids college savings instead. )

And the problem with Botox, or my fear anyway, is that I could then star in the Ice Woman Cometh….or ......that it would require many return visits for upkeep.  I would rather be believable….

You sound as if you are doing pretty darn well !!!!!  Though I understand Cindy-envy. Just remember, she will be in menopause soon too !

Regarding star endorsers : I giggled the other day when I heard that Josie Bissett ( from Melrose Place and gorgeous ) was the new spokeswoman for a skincare line because he has had a facelift and it didn’t go so well !!!!

Happy Holidays to you !

Hiya Lulu!

Sweetie, you flatter me…I don’t consider myself a pro, but thank you! :)  Being an aesthetician is a continuing learning experience as there are always new products, new procedures (and I’m not talking about plastic surgery-lol) and techniques.  I have been a legal assistant since I was 21 years old and decided, after marriage breakdown and other family stuff, decided that I was now going to live my dream.  I have always had this passion for fashion, style and makeup/skin care since I was a teen and was dissauded by well meaning parents and career counselors at school as they said it would not bring in any money.  Well ha, ha on them!  It is now a big industry and I feel so vindicated in my new career choice.

When people ask me how I keep my skin its best, I don’t tell them to use certain lines/products.  I always tell them find what works for you and your skin and keep doing it (plus drink a lot of water, tea (as it contains antioxidents as well as being extremely relaxing!) and get some exercise!  All the products in the world are not going to make you look good if you don’t follow up with doing the above common sense things. As for Cindy and Josie et al, well until I win the lottery and can afford to make “mistakes” like this, I will keep on keeping on.  And kudos to you for being so good to your skin - Excellent work!

Keep Glowing and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Blessed Solstice and Happy Kwanza (felt I had to cover all the bases here) oh and Happy Eid Mubarak too.  In Toronto, we have such a diverse popluation that I don’t like to leave anyone out.

Hi SugarMama,

I hope your holidays were wonderful !!

I was thinking about you over New Year’s Day because 1. I was having massive hot flashes and 2. one of our neighbors was telling us about how her friend had tried Meaningful Beauty !

I know this is a bit after the point, but just to let you know, that the woman found the products really harsh for her skin, but apparently the worst part was cancelling the auto shipment. It seems it took a few months. They just kept shipping it and charging her and told her it would take several weeks or billing cycles to stop. Imagine ? They can process an order in a couple of days, but need a couple of billing cycles to stop it ?
