from felllow reader: I’m not sure what color to pick for a winter boot. I need something that
will go with everything. I’m pretty tired of black and chocolate brown and
want to go with something warmer, neutral and versatile. What color is
best? I’m thinking about chestnut or cognac.

Ooh, that’s difficult! The thing is, how much of your wardrobe are you carrying forward? If you already have a winter coat, then you really need to ensure boots and coat work together. If the boots are your first buy of the winter, you’ve got more scope. I would go for mushroom if you’re moving away from classic colors.

I tend to only buy black and brown boots - boring I know, but that way I can be sure all my officewear and my casualwear: t-shirts, shirts, cardigans etc, which are neutral in color, will work with the boots. Then I allow myself one pair of crazy footwear like red boots or apple-green sandals for summer and just wear them with good old plain black clothing. It may sound a bit anal-retentive but I don’t have the budget to own clothing that doesn’t work really well together.

Wardrobe woes? Worry not!

Gray is very trendy this season. A beautiful cognac/ chestnut riding boot is absolutely classic, though, and my personal favorite.

Grey, that’s this year’s colour for sure ... or mushroom if you want to give it the catwalk name!

Ok, you guys will think I’m off my rocker here. But last year I bought 2 pairs of boots: one black; one spice. I gotta tell you I wear the @#&% outta those spice boots & I get compliments every time I wear them. They go with so much of my wardrobe…mainly constiting of browns, pumpkin, turquoise, etc. So if this is an option for you, I say go for it!!

Happy hunting,
Hachi

I have three pairs of boots: 1 pair of dressy black knee-high boots with heels, 1 pair of casual flat brown boots, and 1 pair of black men’s waterproof boots for days like today, when it’s wet, icy, and/or snowy outside. It’s all I need. I got both pairs of black boots at Payless and the brown boots at National Wholesale Liquidators, so I didn’t spend a ton of money. They’re all terrific.

If you’re tired of black and brown, then chestnut or cognac can work well, as can gray and camel. Just avoid any bright colors, because they won’t coordinate as well.

I like the gray best.  I just bought a pair of gray suede winter boots and I LOVE them!  But then again, I really don’t wear brown.
