At my weekly appointment at hair salon, I overheard two ladies discussing how, when they’re nearing a pregnancy due date, they try to perfectly time mani/pedi and waxing appointments so as to look well-groomed in the stirrups (I actually don’t know if stirrups are involved in most birthing situations. I just threw the term in for the imagery.) The concept disturbed an older patron who feels like we have it too good nowadays, stating that if we have the extra time and energy to be this self-absorbed that we should be focused on pre-birth education......ummm, call me self-absorbed & shallow but I WOULD SO DO THE SAME THING!!!!

How do I know this? Because I am obsessed with my pedicure & being perfectly clean shaven when I go to the gyno NOW! (I know I am not alone here ladies) I am not a mother, but I am sure that most women pamper themselves onel ast time before their lives become totally absorbed with being a new Mommy. PLUS I am thinking, the last 2 months of the pregnancy probably have not been the best looking 2 months of your life. Then I am thinking that having your man/woman in the birthing room as your cat trap is stretched to the ultimate limit may be a bit startling and unattractive so why not make sure that you are getting your post-baby sexy swag on immediately after dropping that load to make sure that the transition back into being a DIVA in the streets & a sex goddess in the bedroom is flawless!!!!

Just one to think on.

My experience is a bit out of date, but as I recall (back in the days of Noah’s ark and all) that I was too round to bend over much and too broke with baby purchases to have mani’s and pedis etc. Leg hair I didn’t care about, (I’m lucky to have pale blond leg hair and not much of it) and my pedi was limited to keeping my toenails clean and clipped, and my feet smoothed and moisturized.

I did however go to the hairdresser and get a good cut. I highly recommend that.  Packing good personal care items like shaving cream, razors, soothing skin cream, moisturizing body wash are all helpful for that first shower or two in the hospital if you are in for an overnight stay after the birth.

And back in the olden days when I was an RN, most ladies ended up getting shaved anyway by the nurse who admits them to labour and delivery so the whole bikini trimming/waxing on the nether regions was sort of a useless extravagance. And speaking as a nurse, hygiene matters a LOT, but not a haircut down there.

I have two kids and I’m pregnant with my third. Yes, I had my feet in stirrups for both of my births. No, I didn’t have a pedicure. However, I do think that pregnant women should take some time for a little beauty and pampering. First of all, you still need to look good as much as possible. Second of all, it feels fabulous. I think I’ll do a home pedicure before my due date, and then my feet will smell like lemon and mint, and my toes can be a nice dark brown in the stirrups. More importantly, I’ll feel good.

Yes, I agree that pregnant women should get pre-birth lessons and learn what to do and what to expect, but I don’t see any reason not to take some time to look and feel good, and if that means a manicure and/or pedicure, that’s fine.
