As you probably know, it's Fashion Week in New York, and TBF is going to be covering shows from the tents all week. I know, of course, that mature fashionistas are as stylish as anyone . . . but I wondered how pertinent you all feel that fashion week is for you? Are you interested? Or does it not even register on the radar?

Honestly, no. I think that once the trends shake out and those are reported on sites like TBF and in magazines, I then pull what works for me. I've gotten to the point in my life where I am pretty confident as to what I need, but I add a new color or hot idea each season. For example the black and white palette on the front "page" of TBF today I'd definitely go for. But the silhouette is young. In my opin, anyway.

I'm not sure what the cut off is for a "mature" fashionista. I don't feel all that mature, but at age 42, I guess I may be considered so. At any age, though, I'd think Fashion Week is a useful tool. It still gives you ideas and general color and style trends, even if you aren't going to wear them the way they do on the runway. I may not wear a skirt as short as they do, but I can still go for the silhouette, the fabric, the color, or accessories.

I think that Fashion Week should be of interest to all fashionistas, including mature ones. It's true that the more mature you are, the more careful you have to be with the trends, but ignoring them completely will make you look like you're giving up. Maybe just a touch of a trend, like with accessories, is all you need to look current.

There is also Fashion week in Milan and Paris, and I prefer to see the digest versions of all 3 in Lucky, Elle and In Style. The big fall issues of those and similar magazines such as Wish or Fashion in Canada do a good job of reporting on the upcoming trends in colour cut and style.

Fashion Friday on a Canadian tv show called Cityline does a really good breakdown of the wearable long term trends and short term fashion pieces that are a good buy to update the classic base of your wardrobe.

I follow that and figure out if I will add in something that I like.

Oh, I'm always interested in what's new on the runway, but to be honest, the models are what interest me ... I keep wondering what they are really like, and whether they really enjoy that whole world. The fashions themselves are interesting not becuase I think I would ever wear them (let alone afford them OR fit into them) but becuase it's always a challenge to find something a model is wearing that actually makes her look pretty and happy. So many of these outfits seem to make women look mean, unapproachable, and tough or just plain idiotic. There is little love for the woman, but rather shock factor for the public. Even if you were at a funky art gallery opening in NYC, you wouldn't talk to the chick in the getup that looks like a large feathery apple, or the one who looks like she just emerged from the mummy's tomb complete with black-and-green eye shadow. I just look at the whole scene and wonder what everyone is so excited about....it's like the emperopr's new clothes. They look absolutely horrible 99% of the time, and people are falling all over each other to oooh and aah over them.

So it's amazingly refreshing to find a really lovely dress that just makes the model look like the reincarnation of Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly. You know....regal and pure classiness. That's the challenge, to me.
