I’ve learned a lot about fashion and style over the years. My mother, Ronda, is one of the most stylish women I’ve ever met ( I still say this after meeting Beyonce once :) and she dropped little pearls of fashion wisdom as often as she could. Everything from the genius (never be too matchy, your pieces should go not match) to the insane (chocolate = pimples). After mommy, there came advice from the people that give style advice for a living, fashion & beauty editors, who taught me all manners of highly guarded, inspired tips.
But the advice that I remember each time I open my closet, hit the shops or click “buy” online is something that I’ve learned from myself over these 22 years. Be Yourself. I know, I know, it’s simple, it’s trite, it’s over used and it’s not even a fashion tip. But it guides my day-to-day style (and the style of some of the industry’s icons—Coco, Audrey, Marilyn, J.Lo, on and on) and is the most important thing to consider.
Being yourself, for me, manifests itself in my near avoidance of any type of structured dress, top or pant. I prefer shifts, which make my weirdly high-waisted shape look less blah. I also favor dresses in solid colors, no prints and very rarely do I mix it up and wear separates. My style is also very simple, not plain, but nowhere near over-embellished. I’ll rock a pair of shoulder-length hoop earrings a la Jennifer Lopez, but I won’t pair it with a big necklace and I’ll probably forgo the dozens of bangles that day.
So that’s it. That’s the big secret…let your personality dictate your style and you’ll never go wrong. What’s your #1 Fashion Tip?
