My #1 piece of fashion advice

How is any woman supposed to survive in the fickle, trend obsessed world of fashion? We watch designers, models and celebrities come up with new trends every season, and a few months later, that look is sooooo over.  We Budget Fashionistas don’t have the time, let alone the purse strings to keep up with the trends that are constantly developing. My number one piece of fashion advice is to develop a signature style. Having your own look allows you to celebrate your uniqueness and know what works for you, while still having enough room for experimentation with trends.

Some of my favorite celebs have developed signature styles that ensure they always look fabulous, and always look like themselves. I love Scarlett Johansson’s modern-day bombshell look and Rihanna’s punk-chic style.  I describe my signature style as flirty sophisticate. I almost always wear skirts or dresses that flatter my curves, and find ways to pop in fun trendy pieces here and there. When tribal prints became all the rage for Spring, the only additions to my wardrobe were a printed blouse and silk scarf. These two pieces worked with most of my wardrobe, so I kept them in rotation throughout the summer.  Selecting trendy items carefully and incorporating them into your wardrobe helps freshen up your closet, keep you looking current, and ensures you aren’t tossing out a big bag of clothing every season. So it’s time to start thinking about what Fall trends will work for you, and which ones just aren’t your style.

I like to think of my style as classic casual with a touch of fun. I prefer classic styles and colors in general, but I find that most blazer jackets make me feel too stiff and formal, so I rarely wear them. I do love to add bold earrings, fun oblong scarves, and my hair coverings. I find that if I stick with what works for my body and my style, well, it’s hard to look bad.

Sounds like you’ve got great methods of spicing up your signature classic style. But I must say I do love blazers - I think they make you look so chic and pulled together, even if you are just wearing jeans and a T-shirt. If I were you I’d consider a trendier cut blazer, or one with an interesting color or unexpected details. Its instant-chic without the stuffiness.

It’s not that I don’t have blazers. In fact, just this winter, my mom and I were at JCPenney, and she found a great blazer. It was a lovely black-and-white plaid (sort of) and somewhat square-shaped, with a sash belt, a round neckline, and 3/4 sleeves. First, my mom found one for herself and then she found one for me. I tried it on, and I couldn’t believe how great it looked. I felt like Jackie O. Best part was that both jackets were on clearance, so we each paid $14.99 for them. I love to wear it in the winter for the Sabbath and holidays. I also have a denim blazer that I like to wear sometimes in cooler weather. I love the way that blazer gives me a waist.

It’s just that since most blazers don’t really suit my style, I don’t wear them all that much. I work from home, casually, and I’m a mommy, so I don’t really need blazers all that much. I find that wearing a fitted button-down shirt or a wrap top makes me feel very polished and put-together, but those kinds of tops are more my style.

However, I do think that every woman should have a couple of blazers in her wardrobe, even if she only needs them for job interviews. They do polish things up when necessary.

What a steal! That JC Penny blazer sounds great. I’ve got my eye on this one by Richard Chai for Target
