Hi everyone,

My relative from England is visiting, and her epilator, which she uses to shave her legs, isn’t working well because of the differences in electricity/voltage. I’ve just barely heard of an epilator before she arrived. Do you use them? Do you prefer shaving in the shower? Finally, where do you find them?? She needs a new one. Thanks guys!

Obviously I don’t use them, but I can say that no woman I’ve dated used them either. My first girlfriend had one, but more as a curiosity than a functional beauty product (I think she’d gotten it from her mom). I can also say that they are probably one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever seen.

As far as where to get one, the internet is being unusually recalcitrant to provide anything other than mail-order/e-shopping. I think I’ve seen them at Sally Beauty, though.

You know, I’ve heard of epilators but actually had to look it up online to find out what it was—and the fact that it pulls each hair out scared me a little (okay, a lot). Still, I’m sure the results last longer than shaving—Christiana, I’d love to know what your relative has to say about the pain factor . . .

I remember something called the “epilady.” It looked like a razor, but it pulled hairs out by the root. A friend of my mom’s got one, and she wrote to the company about it. I remember what she said about it:
1) It took a long time to use, much longer than shaving.
2) It was PAINFUL.
3) It left a lot of ingrown hairs.
In other words, it wasn’t a good product, which is probably why it’s so hard to find now.

On my own legs, I use an electric razor most of the time. Sometimes, I’ll splurge and use Nair depilatory lotion. I like the results with both, and they don’t hurt.

I remember these from back in the day. The things are torture devices. Your friend is right Machazait, they are painful and don’t work. Plain old razors do it for me.
