What does it take to move a T-shirt from the $9.99 bargain rack to $143?
Lately, I’ve been noticing t-shirts are getting mighty pricey these days. Whether or not it’s organic t’s with messages of social change made in the USA retailing for $39 or the pricier Ed Hardy T’s for $143, t-shirts have moved in beside more tailored clothes with high pricetags.  The design of the shirt is still the same box cut, sometimes they have “slim cut’ but all that means is that they change the silhouette and use less material.  Recently, I have my son a t-shirt that had been given to me at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Had it not been given to me, I doubt I’d have paid the $88 retail for it as listed on the designer’s site.

What gives?  What’s the highest price you’ve ever spent on a t-shirt?

Holy Moly! $143!! What is the shirt made of? Recycled gold? The most I’ve paid recently was $12.99 for a Michael Starz tee shirt at Marshalls, and they seem to go for about $50 or so. They are nice, but still, a tee shirt. And they are also one size fits all. So if you are on the extreme small or large end of their fit range, I’m not sure they are going to look $50 worth of chic.

Old Navy and Target are still the best tee places IMHO.

It’s like the $200 pair of jeans.. from a manufacturing standpoint there’s only so much one can do with denim and the difference between a $50 pair and $200 pair isn’t enough to justify a 400% price increase. Most t-shirt companies use the same manufacturer, American Apparel, and the tshirts in bulk often cost less than $3 a pop. So again, you’re paying for name and brand.

Note:you can find Ed Hardy tshirts for aroun $30 at Marshalls. I justsaw a couple at the Marshalls in Paramus, NJ.

I’ll pay more if I really like the shirt - good quality material and stitching, and some unique aspect like color, cut, or pattern design.  Most I’d pay though for a t-shirt-like top is probably $35.
