I've noticed there are women who try to stick to a look that they had when they were in their early twenties.
It doesn't always work.
What are some of the things you've changed about your own appearance as you've gotten older?
Was it difficult? What pushed you to make the change?
What are some of the things women you know have held onto that drive you crazy?
Can you find exceptions to the rule (ex: Maxine Hong Kingston, who has held onto her long locks though they are grey and has managed to make them almost her trademark).
I haven't seen women stick with a "look" so much as they stick with rules. I have a friend who still insists on going by the fashion rules of the 1960's and 1970's, and she feels that even if most women let those rules go, those women are just tasteless.
For example, I just got a pair of slingback sandals in light muted gold. When my friend saw them, she asked me "with what are you going to wear them?" I told her that I could wear them with anything. She said no, that I could only wear them for dressy occasions, and only with a gold skirt or dress. She didn't want to hear it when I said that rules like that are long gone.
Let's see...I've gone from long hair (straight waist-length) to shorter; from making many of my own clothes to buying better quality clothes; I have a different body shape now. I remember when I bought my first pair of blue jeans...at about age 14 and bought guy's Levis...thankfully jeans now come in many different shapes and sizes (even though it is still hard to find one I REALLY like!). Probably the worst is hanging onto items too long when they go out of style (eg. all those clothes with shoulder pads in the 80s...it isn't like you could buy much else then and it's hard to get rid of good quality clothes).
