A taxing dilemma

I was doing my taxes the other day (fun times, I know you’re all jealous!), and instead of tallying up my deductions, I took the automatic deduction (a little over $5,000, I believe), like I always do.

From reading other posts, it looks like a number of us donate to Goodwill. Is it worth it to total up your donations for tax purposes? Does anyone do this? I always assumed I didn’t donate enough to make it worth totaling it up (there is a very, very small chance it would amount to more than $5,000 anyway), but I’m curious to see what everyone else does. I am far from a tax expert, and can use all the advice I can get!

I haven’t done that yet and I don’t think my donations amount to $5,000 too! =)

I have never done that and I wasn’t aware that I even could. But I know my donations are far under $5,000.

Do you mean you take the automatic deduction because no one else can claim you as a dependent? I believe you can still claim other deductions after you do that. I typically do not claim my goodwill items because I always fail to get a receipt, I just throw the stuff into the bins. I know the chances of being audited are slim, but with my luck, it would happen :)
