I was just watching Oprah, and her topic today reminded me of one of my best budget beauty tips that I give to clients:

Don’t smoke

First of all, a two-pack-a-day habit can cost over $100,000 over several years. That’s $100,000 that could be saved and spent on all sorts of clothes, bags, shoes, skin care, makeup, and more.

Second, you have fewer health risks, which means that the money that might have paid medical bills can now go towards clothes, shoes, bags, skin care, makeup, and more.

Third, even if your health isn’t enough to motivate you, consider that smoking is the second worst thing for your skin (after sun exposure). It stimulates free radicals which age the skin, it worsens fine lines around the mouth from all that puckering (I say if you’re going to get fine lines from puckering, let it be from puckering to kiss your spouse and kids), and it gives skin an ashy gray cast. Smoke-free skin is healthier and needs less makeup, which saves you time and money.

I saw that too, and it is great advice! That, and drink lots of water to keep skin hydrated . . . so easy!

So far, I don’t have a lot of fine lines, but I have the most wonderful husband and the two most adorable children, so I’m doing a lot of puckering :) Except that I think that kind of puckering is actually healthful.

Here’s another one that I wish I had known earlier on in life...ALWAYS WEAR SUNSCREEN...it is the BEST anti-aging product out there!
Even though it sounds like a no-brainer I think alot of people don’t understand that you need to wear sunscreen every day not just in the summer or when it is sunny.

I read an article in which one dermatologist said that constantly telling people to use high SPF sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours is not very effective at getting people to do it. The dermatologist said that most people are intimidated by those instructions. He said that people should work up to that by starting with very high SPF. Not that people shouldn’t reapply suncreen as needed, but they need to work their way into that habit.

Sorry, but I can’t remember where that article was. I do remember that the dermatologist stood by the advice of wearing sunscreen and reapplying every so often. He just felt that people should work up to that habit.
