For years, I’ve used plain old vaseline (!) at night on dry areas of my face, which I believe has helped me keep my skin looking young enough that most folks can’t believe I have a kid in middle school. I wondered if I was the only one, ‘til I read an quote from a dermatologist that said her patients that use vaseline in the same way have maintained great-looking skin as they age.
So that’s my super budget beauty secret—anyone else have a budget beauty home remedy to share?
Olive oil. I met a women who had lived in Aspen her whole life (mountain is very dry), and she made me guess how old she was...one of the most awkward questions you can force on someone btw...I guessed 40 (I thought she was probably 43/44). She was 82! It makes sense if you think about it. Extra virgin olive oil is loaded with antioxidants, and you can’t call it a light moisturizer, but it is fantastic for a quickie make-up removal, and is a most excellent night “cream” during the harsher winter months.
1) DRINK WATER! and lots of it. your skin will glow with 8 glasses of water. Substitute water in for your gross diet and regular sodas and juice, and the skin will get better and better. I started drinking more water and my acne is getting better. Your skin gets thinner and more wrinkly because of a lack of water in it, which is where moisturizers come in, which pull in moisture aka water.
2)Cleanse every night, especially after wearing makeup and the like. That stuff can wreak havoc on skin especially if kept on at night, when skin is awake and regenerating. Wear olive oil instead :P
3)Wear less makeup, both in quantity and thickness. Foundation can be used as concealer, tinted moisturizer and a light dusting of powder foundation can be used as foundation. It has a less severe effect on the skin and your look, making it look fresh as opposed to all-caked-up.

Vaseline is also good for lip balm, cuticle cream, rough elbows, etc. Using Carmex all the time actually makes dry lips worse because it is medicated. Too much medication actually has a reverse effect, i.e. dry lips. So I love my plain ol’ vaseline.
I use L’Occitane’s 100% Pure Shea Butter, and while it is very cha-ching, you only need a little bit to moisturize your undereyes and lips, and its so light when compared to cheaper versions such as bath and body works’ version. B&BW;’s version felt crazy greasy to have on my face, most likely best for those with incredibly dry skin, better for the body it seems. Have some of the lovely ladies at Sephora/L’Occitane make you up a sample and that itself will be enought to really moisturize your face and cuticles for a while. The tiny lip balm version that runs about ten bucks, I imagine will make for a really great undereye and wrinkle cream and will last for a looooooong time. It can be mixed with water, beeswax, olive oil, herb-infused oil, and essential oils to make a different kind of cream depending on your needs.
That being said, using up all the old tubs of vaseline around the house is way more eco-friendly and better than buying a $39 tub of shea butter and forgetting all about your petroleum jelly!
Year round, I use Neutrogena sunscreen with a high SPF. I think it costs around $7.00. I also like Neutrogena body oil.
To help my son with his teen age acne, I found the Aqua Glycolic Facial Cleanser and Toner to be not only the right price, but it’s a regemine that really works with acne skin! I think both cost around $12.00 a piece. For a moisturizer, he’s using the Avalon Organics Orange cream (around $12.00). If you use this produce, make sure you use sunscreen everyday since it will make your skin photosensitive.
If you live near the mall and there’s a Sephora there, you can apply makeup on for free. :D It’s a no-brainer, really.
I found that a lot of expensive face lotions don’t work sometimes… I have combination skin and the winter season is driving it crazy. My T-zone is perfect and sometimes too oily, but the corners of my mouth get dry and start peeling. I tend to buy a lot of products for my face and body to dry different things. I do not recommend any products by Biore. They don’t work well. Aveeno has a great line of lotions for affordable prices, so I think anyone will have better luck buying something from them.
Bath and Body Works makes a greasier tub of pure shea butter that is good for body moisturization. You can buy the lip balm sized tub and use that for dry dry areas, and use a Jojoba oil like Desert Essence’s for 10 bucks as an overall moisturizer. Raw Shea Butter is the best, and thats available on Amazon, but I can’t vouch for a particular seller personally. However this seller gets great reviews and is selling a whole lot of raw pure shea butter for the lip balm sized tub of shea butter’s price… the link : http://www.amazon.com/African-Shea-Butter-Creams-100%/dp/B0009JQFF6/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1203898675&sr=8-1
I also vouch for getting samples of expensive stuff before buying it because you wanna make sure you get what you like. Also, free mascara never hurts when you buy a more than drugstore priced foundation or blush.... hehe :P
