Here’s some of my tips for debt relief-

Take a deep breathe. You didn’t get into debt in a day and you won’t get out of debt in a day either. It will take time, so just sit down and take a deep breathe.

Stop Spending. Sounds really simple, but I’m always amazed at the number of people who say they want to get out of debt, but still spend like a millionaire.

Get Three Months of Bank and Credit Card Statements. Head online or to your bank branch and get three months worth of statements. Set up a budget sheet and record everything that you spent so you can have a complete picture of what’s coming in and what’s going out.

Take stock of what you can cut out. Do you really need HBO? Or that morning latte? Or a closet full of design purses?

Take stock of what you can sell. Have a fur? Sell it. An expensive car or lease? Try and trade it in.

Look for other ways to make money Turn your hobby like quilting, party planning, etc into a side gig. Get a second job and if you have teenage kids, you might want them to get a job as well.

I really like this thread! My biggest problem at the moment is getting organized enough to get on a budget. And just when I think I am ahead something always happens. How do I get out of this cycle? I am recently trying the program Microsoft Money but it takes time to learn. And I have to get on a budget fast because we are finally moving into a house and I really want to get out of this “broke” stage! Thanks

I used Microsoft Money for a long time and a feature that helped me was the pie chart
It was easy to see what percentage of the budget went to what expense.

I love the pie chart. I think my biggest mistake was using the online feature. Now I have no control over what goes into my register. If I try to enter anything in the register I mess the whole thing up completely. So I will just start over...LOL Thanks.

This is a bit off-topic, but does anyone know of an easy-to-read website that breaks down finance terms? I’m trying to take control of my finances and am thoroughly confused! Is there a Budget Vocab Lesson blog out there?

Okay, jgrr, Wikipedia isn’t perfect, but this page might be a good starting point to clarifying some terms—there are brief explanations of some basics here, with links to other pages that might be useful. Hope it helps!

Microsoft Money really helped me get organized and it allowed me to see what I was spending each month along with what I was earning. It really got my spending habits under control and it helped me establish a budget.
