Yea or Nay: Rent-A-Rock

Socialites have always turned to jewelry and dress rental services to “borrow” unique pieces for special events.  With the introduction of services like those offering one-time rentals (like, with prices from just under a hundred bucks for a piece worth thousands) to subscription services (like, with monthly commitments starting at $29.95 for diamond look-a-likes), this service is open to the masses.

Now you all know that I’m not a big fan of the whole “rent-a-luxury”, mostly because the rental fees can be quite high AND it feeds into our obsession with luxury items we can’t afford. However, I can see the value in “borrowing” for your wedding, but do you really need to wear two carat diamond earrings everyday?

I said yes, but really only for special events, like weddings, or other formal occasions.

Fake jewelry can look cheap and, especially at your wedding, no one wants to look cheap.

But everyday, I’ll stick with my simple bracelet from Tiffany’s and my college ring on my finger.

A nay for me. I’d rather wear the few pieces that I have that have emotional value to me.
I don’t want to spend money on pieces that I won’t be able to keep – I would rather save up that money to buy a piece of jewelry later on. I went to both sites, and the one thing that bugged me about it was the comment on one of them that you should/could not wear nice jewelry items more than once because everyone would have seen them. I realize that may be true in the world of movie stars – but in real life? I think the beauty of jewelry is wearing it through the years, the memories that get built around it.

OK….. starting to sound sentimental….. sorry!

I’ve actually know a lot about the Borrowed Bling stuff & although the rental prices seem very reasonable, rest assured that the items do not look cheap at all. I’ve worn the pieces side by side with my real diamonds and these “man-made diamonds” can stand next to the best real ones. They have big bling for special occassions but they also have a ton of every day jewelry too. For the great price, it is A LOT of fun! I’m hooked and have had great customer service. For those people who have never tried renting to look chic, you don’t know what fun you’re missing & how much $$$ you can save!  I’ve seen the exact same pieces that I’ve rented for $29 selling at the upscale boutqiues in my area for over $500.

I think it’s a great idea, since sometimes it’s important to have really special jewelry for a one-night only occasion, and it’s better than blowing a lot of money on it or wearing fake.

Hey Crystal, stop shilling for those guys. Paid shills, other than the author of the blog (who seems to come clean when she does it), are not cool here.

I said NAY!  This is what Forever 21, Charlotte Russ, and if you want to spend a little money Bebe and other stores with accessories are for.  Even Walmart has some good looking bling sometimes :)
