The January 2006, issue of Shape Magazine quotes a very interesting study on our urge to overspend.

The magazine states: “The mere presence of fellow shoppers can sway us to shell out for a label, possibly because we don’t want to be viewed as cheap, a study in the Journal of Consumer Research reveals”. The magazine then suggests considering “your purchase in a quiet corner before buying”, which might not be a very practical solution for weekend shoppers. Try this: before you purchase any item, ask yourself Do I love it? Can I afford it? How would this make me feel if I ran into a ex-boyfriend while wearing this?
