September 5, 2008 04:00 PM

You know we love us some Target, and this fall is no exception. From Richard Chai, the GO International line, to some new Isaac Mizrahi, to hot shoes and handbags, we’re feeling a shopping spree coming on. Within our budget, of course. Some Target picks for the season:

GO International School Boy Blazer, Red Plaid, $39.99

Mossimo Black Satin Trench, Berry, $39.99

Isaac Mizrahi for Target Mock Turtleneck Dress, $34.99

MB Drapery Cardigan, $24.99

Isaac Mizrahi for Target Amelia Patent T-Strap Pumps, $29.99

Angie & Lola Bucket Tote, Brown, $39.99

Enjoy this post? Spread the joy.

Yeah—none of this stuff comes in my size, except the shoes and the bag.  Target claims that they offer these things in plus sizes, but I have never—in all of the stores (in several states) I have been in—seen the plus size section offer more than tee shirts and a couple of other random items.  In terms of functionality, the “plus size” sign signifies the place where the maternity sale items are placed.  And Issac Mizrahi’s “Fashion for everyone” slogan is insultingly false.  Sure it goes up to 18—cold comfort when you wear a 20!

Target isn’t alone in this sin though—Norma Kamali for Walmart?  Might as well be called “No fat chicks”.  Vera Wang for Kohls?  Nothing for me there, either.  H&M;doesn’t even sell plus sized clothing in its US stores.  It makes me “grateful” that Old Navy still deigns to allow plus sized women to shop online, even though they don’t want us in their stores anymore.  Bitten by Sarah Jessica Parker?  It technically goes up to a size 20, but their fit in the upper range is bizarrely off. (why do they even bother?  The rest of the retailers seem to think I ought to be grateful that society doesn’t make me go naked.).  Torrid is great, but I’m a grown-up, and I need to dress like one (at least at work).  And people wonder why body loathing and depression are so common among plus sized women!

I keep looking for fashionable clothes for plus sizes, but I’m stuck with the “fat girl ghetto” at the local department stores, Lane Bryant, and a couple of online places.  And while these aren’t exactly “high end”, with the economy in the tank, they don’t exactly qualify as cheap ways to spruce up my wardrobe.

And call me old fashioned, but I like to be able to try on my clothes before I buy them—giving an online store money and then hoping the clothes fit seems a bit bass ackwards to me.

Sorry for the rant, but jeez—how come it is so darned hard for me to spend money?  Another flaw in the capitalist system, I guess.  But at this point, I’m just about ready to set up one of those cyber-begging sites to finance my liposuction!
