UNIQLO Brings Premium Japanese Denim to US, All for Under $60
There’s a relatively new store in the New York area that has joined H&M on my list of bargain shopping must stops. I’ve been a bit reluctant to write about the store, called UNIQLO, because all their US stores are located in the NY/NJ area (but it has 700+ stores worldwide), thus leaving out 95% of the country, but the store is so good, that I just had to write about it.
Straight outta of Tokyo, the store offers premium quality goods at relatively afford prices. Their premium denim jeans look like high-end, but at $39.50 and $59.50, cost half the price. Plus, UNIQLO denim is made of better quality denim than the more expensive brands (thus providing even more support to my thesis that most jeans are WAY over-priced).

UNIQLO only uses Ring denim, which has a textured surface and is woven from ring yarn to give the jeans a rugged and natural fade. To give its jeans the richest color possible, UNIQLO’s partner denim producer uses a technique called rope dyeing, which keeps the core of each thread white, while giving the perimeter a beautiful indigo color. All of the men’s and women’s denim for the spring collection comes from Japan, with nearly all of it sourced from Kaihara, a premium denim producer founded in 1893 and one of the world’s most renowned denim suppliers.
While the jeans are great, UNIQLO is most known for its amazing selection of cashmere sweaters in every color under the rainbow. Think 400 square feet of cashmere sweaters… all priced under $60. I’ve never been to a place that had as big of a selection of quality cashmere sweaters, for the ENTIRE family (men, women, and kids) for such a good price, in my entire life. It’s like the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory of Cashmere Sweaters. In fact, I think Mr. Wonka would even be impressed.
One thing to note…It’s a Japanese store, so it has Japanese sizing. Don’t go there expecting to find a pair of rocking jeans if you’re a size 16 or bigger. However, for petite budget fashionistas, it is one of the only “low-priced/specialty retailer” type stores that sells clothing that is more in scale with your body type.

i’ve been shopping at this store since they opened in nj. it is awesome! great prices with great quality (think banana republic at old navy prices).
this weekend, i was told all nj store were going to be clearance centers - jeans were $20, cashmere sweaters $30… love this store!!
I was intrigued by their website, but does Japanese sizing also mean that those of us with a little bit of extra in the rear (even if otherwise a 6-8 US) should not bother with the jeans? I’d love to hear from someone who’s tried them on—I find jeans the toughest thing to find b/c of my shape (small waist, ample bottom).
Plus the store is just SO DAMN PRETTY. It’s a sight to behold, really. After a shopping spree in December, it’s definitely on my must-stop list every time I’m in NYC!!
I agree with you about “japanese sizing” - I’m ususally a size 4 - 8 depending on the store, not at Uniqlo!! A size 10 - 12 was too small. I tried on some jeans and could not get them over my thighs, left feeling totally dispirited.
actually, I think the sizing runs a little big there. i am usually around a size 6-8 in jeans and the size 6 jeans are a little loose on me! another great thing: they do free alterations on the jeans, and it looks really professional!
I actually just visited the grand opening of the one in Ikebukuro. It was so crowded!!!
But yes, the jeans are very nice. They are maybe a size or two too big, since I usually wear a 25-26, and the 25 is a bit loose for skinny jeans.
I guess the sizing is changed for America though? There is only S, M, L and XL there, and the tops seem true to size.
The shirts are amazing too!! They were on sale for 1290円!
i totally heart uniqlo hehehe! ive just come back from living in tokyo for a yr and my luggage way way over the limit because of this brilliant brand! i get compliments all the time about several tops, jeans and sweaters i got from there. people are always SO jealous about how much i paid for the stuff.
i dont know about america, but in japan, uniqlo has pretty much perpetual sales on certain items and even bigger sales at the end of seasons. i dont know if the US has the uniqlo body or pajama ranges yet, but these are absolutely great. the quality is so amazing and the prices are really really good. stock up in every colour!
but speaking of sizing, i found that theirs is larger than what im used to. i fit a size 58cm (waist i think) pair of jeans at uniqlo, which is around a size 24? 22? thats teeny when you consider i fit a size 27 inch from triple five soul…the tops are small though. tees should be bought a size larger unless u really like the skintight look.
uniqlo should really hurry up and expand to australia already!
I was in NYC on a business trip recently and went out of my way to visit Uniqlo based on this review and stuff I had read in magazines recently. And I just have to say it was worth it. Uniqlo is like what the Gap/Banana wish they could be—super stylish and trendy yet classic, high quality, and so affordable! They had merino sweaters in beautiful colors/shapes for only $39! But I went for the cashmere, and it is really nice quality. However, please note that the cashmere actually prices around $89 now, NOT $60 as this post mentions. Still, I think Uniqlo cashmere is better than Jcrew’s (have both now). I wish Uniqlo would come to my city!!!
