Color trends aren’t just about individual hues, of course—they’re also about how you put ‘em together. The hot combo right now? Black and blue, and everyone—from Gwen Stefani, to Carrie Underwood, to Tyra Banks —has been seen sporting the pairing, to great effect. Which is a bit of a surprise to me, since until recently I’ve only connected black and blue with two unpleasant things—1) a bruise, and 2) the 80s. Still, the more I see it, the more I like it.
The black part is easy, but the blue in question is pretty specific—it’s deep navy or cobalt, and there’s nothing soft about it. Think deep, bold, rich.
Our favorite ways to wear it? In a dress—for day, a blue dress with black belt and boots; for evening, with a little shine and a lot of attitude. For separates, a cobalt or navy on top, paired with those basic black pant or skirt options that are already in your closet. Ready to jump in? Check out these blue options for a little pocketbook-friendly inspiration . . .

Ooh that empire dress is so cute! Chadwicks…who knew?
I agree, upon initial thought, those two color combos had been one in my book to eschew – however, the pictures posted give the two a rich and hip appeal. It just goes to show that when something works for you, no matter what era it defines, just wear it. Why do why always have to wait until those in the spot light do it before we follow
My mom always told me never to wear navy with black but I bought a great navy knit mini-dress with 3/4 sleeves late in the summer that I wanted to wear into the fall and all I could dig out of my closet to wear with it was black boots. I chose a pair of gray tights to go with the outfit and it actually worked. I really love this combo!
Luv that empire dress!!!!!
I bought a midnight blue dress by abs Allen Schwartz and he accessorized it with a wide black elastic belt with a patent leather front with gold on it. I feel the dress is too dark to have a black belt on it. Is this the style and should I wear black heals with it
