The Missing Photos: Average Sized Woman Absent from Streetwear Blogs
What: Gemma Cartwright, of the uber popular UK fashion blog Catwalk Queen, takes on the streetwear bloggers who apparently can’t find any woman stylish woman who wears a size 10+ (but plenty of “plus size” men).
What she says: Dollymix: “I know clothes have a tendency to hang or sit well on slim people, and I’m not saying these bloggers should suddenly stop taking pictures of slim people just to keep us 12+‘s happy. But there are plenty of women out there who’re not model slim but still look amazing…and they seem to be lacking on these sites, which is a real shame.”
What I think: We focus way too much on size and not enough on style. Be the best YOU, that you can possibly be- whether it’s a size 2, 10, 18, or 26.
Also, I’m not sure where this concept that those who work in fashion are all size 2, especially when some of the most influential people in the fashion world aren’t- Fern Mallis, head of NYC’s Fashion Week, Hilary Alexander of UK’s Daily telegraph, Glenda Bailey Editor in Chief of Harper’s Bazaar, etc, etc. Who does tend to be thin, are the assistants and junior staff who’ve watched way too many episodes of “Sex and The City”.

Well said, TBF!! You’re absolutely right—it’s not about size or weight but confidence, style and carriage. I have friends of every size and the truly stylish ones all now how to work their assets and downplay the negatives. I don’t care what size you are or how much your outfit cost, if you accessorize with slouchy posture and/or a bad attitude, nothing looks good. Conversely, a great-fitting pair of jeans and a t-shirt with rockin’ shoes and accessories looks like couture when you stand tall, keep your head up and smile!
If the majority of the clothes for “plus-sized” women out there didn’t look like sacks, you would probably see more women featured in blogs. With the current trend of empire waists and babydoll tops - forget about it. Honestly I see very few plus-sized women dressed to for shape in well fitting clothes that not too large and not skin tight, but accentuating curves and in colors other than black.
ugh.. the “Barbie mentality” is so pervasive! One would think with the advent of such shows as “What not to Wear” and such, style, as opposed to size would start changing the fashion industry. I suppose we’re all just stuck in the size 2 rut…
The Sartorialist does periodically feature some women who aren’t 00’s, but come to think of it I rarely see any who seem to be over a size 10.
Early on in the Sartorialist, I remember he did go to Harlem and take a picture of a woman who was much larger than a 10. He recently went back to Harlem to shoot and one of his subjects, frankly, looked like he was of Cedric the Entertainer or Bruce Bruce girth.
Maybe someone should start a plus-size fashion streetwear blog.
