The Budget Fashionista in the News

| October 16, 2007 06:02 PM | Posted in

I tend to keep the blog free of all the media stuff I do (I post those sort of things on my personal site KathrynFinney.com), but since the “fashionista-is-out-of-the-bag”, I thought I would share with you the fabulous write up about me in this past Sunday’s Daily News. I had no clue that the spread was going to be as big as it was (a two page spread) and

Some answers to some of the questions I’ve received:

1. Yes, that is my bedroom and yes that is my real hair (but I reserve the right to “weave-it-up” at any time.

2. The bedspread was purchased from Dillards in Santa Fe, New Mexico on sale for $99. I had no clue how hard it was to find colorful and vibrant bedding for under $100 (which is why I started the new blog, Budget Casa)

3. The red boots was purchased during Nordstrom’s last shoe sale for $65, down from $350. They make me feel like Superwoman.

4. The lamp was purchased at Marshalls/Home Goods for $39.99 and it’s sitting on a table from Target ($14.99).

5. The necklace is made from sterling silver and even though it was technically a bargain (I spent an hour negotiating the guy down from $1300 to $300 for the set with bracelet and earrings to match), it was still expensive. However, I figure you can aways sell precious metals like silver and gold if you need money, making it a much better investment than say a pair of designer shoes.

6. Yes, that is an Old Navy bag in the corner. Represent!

7. My trusty black Mac is actually a refurbished trusty black Mac. The refurbished Macs come with the same warranty as the brand new ones AND cost about $500 less.

I would also like to thank all my blogging/fashion peeps from Fashion Week Daily to ShinyStyle and everyone in between, who wrote follow up posts on the article. It’s one thing to have love from others, it’s another thing to have the respect and love of your fellow bloggers.

Girl, the boots are fabulous!  I’ve been resisting red boots - I’m melodramatic enough (my friends say) - but now, I’m on the hunt.  May I be so bold as to ask the brand?  I promise I won’t wear mine when you wear yours! (smile)
And big ups - I’m always proud to see you in the news or on TV.

Congrats on all the media attention!  It must be so fun—and maybe a bit nerve-racking.

I’m still bouncing off the walls because this month I was featured in a local paper for the first time for my work over at TheBargainQueen.com.  I was so nervous about the interview and photo, but it turned out great.

It’s great to see traditional media paying attention to bloggers.

And by the way, you’ve been a great inspiration! If you’re ever in Florida, let me know and we can go bargain shopping :)

you have to travel to India, if you think that $99/- was cheap. you can get silk ones for that price. But then it is the country where hand made stuff is dirt cheap. You can go to any Govt store there or look for Bombay dyeing and you will get fine Cotton bed sheets ( a set of two single, two pillow covers and one queen size bedsheet) starting from $50/-. It is really worth a trip to the country and look at all the handlooms available.

I’ve loved your site for about a year now; it’s so refreshing to have a place where style bargains are praised as well as read comments from others who shop the sale racks as well! Your insider tips are the best; keep it up and I’ll be reading!

A couple answers:

To Sakala: I’ve actually been to India and I purchased the cover on the chair from a shop in New Dehli for like 20 bucks. It has handsewn elephants of different colors on it. It’s just hard in the US to find neat stuff like that on a budget.

To Juliette: I can’t tell you the brand of the boots (shoppers secret) but I can tell you that Nordstroms is having another half yearly sale in two weeks.

To Mil: Lots of stuff for women of all ages… for example the sale at Jc Penney’s is for everyone and why can’t a woman of a certain age shop at Forever 21? My mom is a mature, sassy, woman and while she might not wear clothes from the store, she does shop there for accessories.

Congrats on the article…I love this site! Moreover, I have a similar silver necklace I purchased @TJ Maxx @ a grand opening…it is a show stopper and I couldn’t believe the price( I figured they mistagged/didn’t know what they had!)It is a Kenneth Jay Couture who I know creates beautiful fashion jewelry but I was told it was Sterling Silver just hollow because solid SS would be a budget buster. Long story made short it has tarnished from wear and silver cleaner (liquid nor cream) does anything, to remove the tarnished look, which leads me to believe it is a fashion jewelry piece. That is OKAY but how do I clean it??? I’m disappointed that I can’t get it back to its’ former glory. TJ states they will refund my money although I’ve had it for 6 months but I want to keep this necklace…I love it! Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated!?!
