A reader asks: I love shoes! But I need direction on wide shoe stores. I have a bunion and need wide shoes. My size is 7w. I’m nervous about buying online because the fit is so important, especially with wide feet. When I shop in store, all I can find are elderly orthopedic shoes. Is it possible to buy wide stylish shoes?

Stylish, wide width shoes

Have no fear! Shopping for shoes online can be scary, but there’s one aspect that works in your favor: selection. Online shoe stores obviously don’t have to stuff every last size and style into the back room. And that means you have options.

Plus, most online shoe stores let you filter your options by width. Mainstream stores like Zappos, Macy’s, and Kohl’s have thousands of stylish wide and extra wide width shoes available. Ideally, you’d stick with retailers who offer free returns — just in case the fit isn’t right.

  • Salvatore Ferragamo
  • Sam Edelman

I found a wide-width pair of super cute Jessica Simpson pumps in black patent leather at DSW the other day. I didn't realize that brand had wide widths. There were several other JS shoes in wide as well.
