Ten Budget Beauty Tips From a Professional

| November 14, 2007 08:43 PM | Posted in , ,

Our friend Melissa, a true beauty expert, gives us the scoop on the budget beauty tips used by industry professionals. Here’s her ten tips:

1. To dry nail polish in a hurry, spray nails with PAM Oil Spray. (note: this really does work)

2. Olive oil can be added to bath water for a skin softener.

3. Toner/Astringent—Use witch hazel instead. No need to dilute—use full strength. You can also rinse with a splash of Apple Cider Vinegar after cleansing—it balances out the ph of your skin.

4. Cut back on the amount of shampoo you use. Do the same with toothpaste. The manufacturers want us to use more, so we buy more.

5. Keep your pantyhose in the freezer, and they will last longer. (note: remember to take it out at least 30 minutes prior to wear, so you don’t freeze your gams off)

6. For great lotion, mix one-part lotion with one-part vaseline. It works better than plain lotion, and, depending on the cost of your lotion, you can stretch its value. (Note: This totally works)

7. To prevent hair pins from falling out, bend one prong in a “V” about halfway up and insert in hair. It will stay.

8. Old lipstick tubes, thoroughly cleaned, are great for purse-sized pill boxes or for pins.

9. Use hydrogen peroxide as an inexpensive nail bleach.

10. For an excellent facial, mix dry oatmeal and water into a paste and spread on face. Lie down and let it dry. Wash off with warm water.

The oatmeal trick REALLY works. You can also make it into a paste and massage your face with it. This gently exfoliates and seems to suck gunk out of the pores at the same time. An expensive facial can’t beat it.

For a budget manicure, go to Empire Beauty School.  Where I live it’s $6.  I can’t beat it and they do a great job, because they’re students trying hard to impress a teacher.

I’m so happy I discovered your blog, I really am trying to cut back beauty expenses myself.

Here’s something I maybe able to offer the beauty community—free mascara, anyone?

I ask because I’m working on behalf of Maybelline and am allowed to distribute free samples of Maybelline’s Stiletto Mascara. (Hey, in this economy we can all use free mascara, and maybe if you like it you can end up blogging about it or tell your friends.) I used to buy $20 mascara, Vanitymark (awesome because it looks so natural ), but honestly prefer that Stiletto looks equally natural but is more powerful (darker, not clumpy, and shiny—I think it reflects light in a way other mascara’s don’t which is perhaps subconsciously why I like it better). Also it’s priced really well (between $7-$9).

In any event, happy to join the community. Hit me back if you would like a free sample of Maybelline’s Stiletto Mascara (k.shyler@gmail.com). Hope this helps and glad I discovered your blog!

Question:  nail bleach—does that cure the yellowish tint after using red polish?

saver1001—I’m in the same boat, but I go to every beauty counter at department stores and work the free sample angle as best as I can.  Truly helps.  Go everywhere (even when I go on vacation I make it a point to go to a department store, I’m nuts.)

I tried witch hazel alone but it didn’t cleanse as well as my Neutrogena, so to cut back I mix about 60/40 Neutrogena/witch hazel and it works pretty well.
