TBF Fashion Newsletter: Great designs at the Gap, H&M and Target
Well, folks, it’s gotten to the point where I have no choice but to accept that the trend of singers, models, celebrity stylists and pretty much everyone but my Aunt Bernice is turning into a fashion designer or wants to become one. Still, it’s something of a relief to see that some stores are still hiring actual designers to make their clothes, like Target. Hey, even the troubled Gap inc. hasn’t caved in to the celebrity turned designer trend, and for the first time in over a year, I’m impressed by the company’s take on casual chic. (No skirtalls this season, thank God.) Read on to see what affordable, chic gems you’ll want to wear this spring, no matter whose name is on the label.

The problem with not dumbing down is that details and special construction cost money. Target can’t even get seams straight and flat consistently; I think it’s a stretch to think they’re going to be able to manufacture high-end clothes at their price points.
(That black dress in the photo is in stores now. All those bits that are supposed to stand away from the dress kind of hang sadly; the fabric has no body and the ruffly bits all just droop. I’d guess that the necessary interfacing or stiffer lining isn’t present for cost reasons, both fabric costs and construction costs.)
I’m still not impressed with the white shirts from the Gap. They need all the help they can get. And Target, forget it. I go from 12 - 16 (depends on if I exercise for 2-3 months I’m 12-14, if I eat 2-3 months 14-16). I NEVER find any clothing I like in Target. And once you wash it, it looks like hell.
I never shop at the Gap- I just hate the idea of people coming up to me and having the same outfit on. Plus their latest commercial with Claire Danes dancing around drives me crazy. But I saw the Doo-Ri, Thakoon, and Rodarte designs on the cover of Vogue this month and couldn’t resist checking them out. I must say, i was really impressed. I bought a blouse from each of the designers and just love them! They are quirky and original yet appropriate for every day and to wear to work. I think this is the first time I’ve shopped at the Gap since I was in high school over ten years ago.
I actually have the Rodarte trapeze blouse. Wore it yesterday and got a compliment on it. I think I may shoot to the Gap tonight after my yoga class and see what may be left over (I like the Doo.Ri shirt dress).
