On the streets of Manhattan, generally the only “real” thing you can buy is a really good hot pretzel. As for everything else that gets sold on the streets – from CDs to clothing to designer handbags – they’re all bootlegs, or rather, fakes. At one point, New York City was so swamped with counterfeit goods that there were vendors hawking “Louis Vuitton.” While the city still has no shortage of knockoff bag and clothing vendors, nowadays it’s a more discreet business. You now have to head to a back room to find the “very nice bags.” Bags no longer have hardware bearing the logos of the brands, only the designs. Most counterfeit clothing seems to be limited to mid-range brands like North Face and Roca Wear.
