TBF Beauty Newsletter:  Will They Let a Plus-Size Woman Become America’s Next Top Model?

| March 13, 2007 08:01 PM | Posted in

Okay, we admit. We’re ANTM junkies. We count the hours in between Wednesdays, for those are the days that Tyra Banks decides which sobbing young woman will get booted off her CW11 reality show. We can’t wait until the end of the episode, when queen Tyra declares, in that well rehearsed deadpan voice, “the next name I am going to call is.” Will it be the gangly girl from the midwest who held a fund raiser in church to pay for her airfare to New York? The edgy girl with short hair and tattoos who claims she doesn’t even want to be there? The central casting created stereotypical black girl with continuous PMS? The central casting created stereotypical white girl who’s sexually confused? Or will it be the plus-size contestant who works it twice as hard as the other girls?

I really like seeing normal people model, it is more like what it would look like on me.  I am spending more money on clothing now.  I all plus sized!  If I were a size 5, I would only spend 1/2 the money since everyone has it and its on sale!  The larger sizes go first, get a hint fashion industy!  I buy what I know looks good on me because I do not see anyone modeling for us larger women.  (cant tell if it really would look good)

society’s standard of “plus size” is so distorted. It’s seeing things like this that make me kind of sad.

This is plus size? What size are these girls? 6? I don’t watch ANTM but I think that models who are at seriously unhealthy weight should not be allowed to work. Maybe this would discourage young girls from starving.

Exactly! Since when did size 6 become “plus” size??? Give me a break - it’s called “normal”. I have never seen a size 6 in the plus department in any store ANYWHERE! I am definitely rooting for one of the normal, beautiful so-called “plus size” girls to win!

It’s time to get back to reality fashion world!

In the industry, plus size is considered a size 10 or above- which is pretty sad. So these girls are “plus size” according to industry standards.

A 4/6 is definitely not considered plus size. I wear anywhere between size 2-6 and I am not plus size. Neither is Alexa from above comments. What I would like to see is women of all sizes and shapes modeling. The problem I run into is that models don’t usually have curves, so I look at what they are wearing and although I can appreciate it for being beautiful, I know it would never fit me. I went through every single Spring 2007 RTW runway show and 90% of the designs wouldn’t work for my body type.. because I have boobs and a butt.. I can understand that they do need to have a standard for sizing, because otherwise it complicates the fitting of the models. Maybe it’s more in the hands of the designers and the people who select the models? Who knows..

both of these women are beautiful and i think it’s sad and hypocritical for tyra to stock her show with rail thin types after crying ALL OVER THE PLACE about her “fat” picture in people magazine!  she even had a little 11 year-old girl on her show with an eating disorder to show how society’s standard of beauty damages kids.  she should be ashamed of herself…

I’m a 10/12, and damn, that’s sad to know that I’m considered a plus size.

Do you know what dress size she is? I think she’s beautiful.

Alls I can say is I am 5’3” and a size 6 misses, size 11 juniors, weigh around 130 and feel like I would be grouped into this “plus size” category and more so because I am petite AND curvy. You know what I mean….You NEVER see models petite and curvy. Like we don’t exist or nobody thinks this can look good…I definetly beg to differ

I am definitely cheering on Diana and Whitney. I’m a plus size woman. In my eyes, these girls are simply healthy…not plus sized. In the modeling world however, they are. At any rate, they’re beautiful and I’m backing them up 110%. You go girls!!!!!

Model sizes must be standardized so that sample gowns can be used at more than one show, its not about encouraging rail-thin women.  But as a 5’7 size 0 woman, I have never considered myself “abnormal” and I do not dislike seeing models my own size for obvious reasons.

Well,

I think the best person should win.  I really do not think that the white plus size chick (sorry I dont know names well) is just not cut out for it.  She doesnt sell me when shes modeling, its empty.  The other girl, shes good.

And there are size zero girls out there perfectly healthy.  I am size 14 and definitely NOT the healthiest though I seem to be having problems losing weight even though I am eating and acting healthy now.

My point: Dont hate on other people of other sizes.  Most of the girls on the show look like they are a healthy weight.  They sure seem to eat healthy on the show.

The industry should realize that they cant sell half the people in america there clothes because we dont look good in those cuts.  I have big boobs and no ### but curvy hips and it is so hard to find proper fitting clothes in regular or plus sizes.  I know we cannot all have our clothes tailored and there is little that can be done but cant they put a few different shapes out.  And curvy doesnt always mean big, how about a few curvasous women cause that is something that almost all women are to some extent.  And shoes.  Come on now, I can NEVER find shoes past size 10 and its so hard to get shoes.

At 5” 7” size 0 I wouldn’t call you abnormal but you’re certainly not the average size. I understand having a standard size but why does it seem to be smaller than a 0? Even the average size 0 woman seems to have hips, breasts, a butt, thighs, something that keeps them from resembling the typical model.
I also feel like that argument about models being a clothes hangar is bull. Women bring out the beauty in many items. Sticking a gorgeous gown on a stick isn’t always the best way to show how fabuous it is just like some items won’t look right on someone who is shaped more like an apple.

I know we are a little late to the argument Tracey, but I really like what you said.  “Sticking a gorgeous gown on a stick isn’t always the best way to show how fabulous it is just like some items won’t look right on someone who is shaped more like an apple.”  Too true.  Sometimes, having someone with a beautiful figure or face can really drive home how gorgeous the garment really is.

I wonder the same thing too. I believe that in order for a plus size model to win - they must have all plus size contestants one season.  Its a shame but I think thats the only way. :(
