Target’s Next Big Designer Partnership: Neiman Marcus


Didn’t see this one coming — Target’s latest designer partnership is with … a luxury department store giant? This morning Target announced it’s teaming up with the high-end retailer Neiman Marcus for a winter holiday collection featuring Neiman’s stable of clothing and goods designers.

According to the Washington Post, the line will feature “more than 50 products from 24 designers, including Oscar de la Renta and Diane von Furstenberg, as well as younger designers such as Derek Lam, will be available at both stores and on their websites starting Dec. 1 until they sell out. Items in the collection will cost from $7.99 to $499.99, but most will sell for less than $60.”

We think it’s a shrewd move by both Target (not a surprise, they’re pretty sharp over there) and Neiman Marcus (slightly more surprising) in this constantly evolving new economy. The two say their common ground is “a love for design,” but we figure it’s more a love of pulling in more consumer dollars from diverse demographics by whatever means possible. Either way, we’re psyched to see Diane von Furstenberg AND Derek Lam at our beloved Tar-jay.

Now if only we could get Walmart and Saks to play this nice …

    This will be interesting, but I wonder if it will be as poorly organized as the Missoni and Jason Wu roll outs were. I know from the store’s standpoint, selling out in minutes is cause for high-fives all around, but it’s fairly demoralizing for customers, especially when someone has other commitments that prevent rushing the doors.

    These collaborations are always exciting though, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they do (and what they’re planning on selling for $500).
