The Lowdown: Okay, petite girls don’t get a whole lot of fashion sympathy in our culture, but seriously, finding clothes that fit is a real dilemma for smaller girls too. Unless you like being 40 and being forced to select amongst the polyester and unlined, single-stitch seaming of the junior department at JC Penney (so not cute).
Much like plus size fashionistas, petites tend to pay a premium for special sizing, meaning prioritizing pieces is in order. While ideally you might like to have an entire petite wardrobe, many items — dress pants, jeans and tops for example — can be adjusted easily and inexpensively by a tailor (or often, for simple things like having a hem taken up, the drycleaners), but other items, like jackets and dresses, really work only work just right when cut for a petite frame to begin with.
Because petite dresses seem to be the hardest to find, we’re making them our first mission, and we’ve found some fab name brand and designer petite dresses at Nordstrom — all discounted in the descriptively-named Half-Yearly Sale of course — to get us started.
