Hot Trend: Strobing Makeup Technique

Ever since the Kardashians infiltrated our TVs, department stores and social media apps, we’ve been hyper-obsessed with finding — and mimicking — the makeup trends that deliver the red carpet-ready sheen the Kardashians have single-handedly perfected.

First it was going big on bronzer, then the heavy contouring craze. And, now that we’re in the #nomakeup and #nofilter phases of summer living, it’s all about the angelic glow, aka the strobing makeup technique.

What is the Strobing Makeup Technique?

Considered the opposite of intense contouring, strobing, as the Instagram masses are calling it, focuses on the dewy highlighted areas of the face. The strobing makeup technique involves highlighting above the cheekbones, down the nose, above the brow and maybe even on the cupid’s bow. This is the less-makeup alternative to bringing out your best assets and features without the need of a multi-color contouring palette.

Like it’s contouring cousin, strobing products come in a variety of forms, from creams to powders to sticks and everything in between. Applied your chosen strobing product to all of the parts of your face that the sun would naturally hit and gleam off of. And, you have options. Achieve your desired look by loading product under your foundation, over it, or on a fresh, natural face.

Not sure which product to use? Follow your standard guide for determining the best form for your own face: oily skin typically does better with powders, while liquid foundation lovers will probably prefer a liquid solution that can be applied with fingers, a beauty blender or a brush.

Add Some Undertone

You’re not limited to the white and silvery glow either. You can find product with a variety of undertones to suit your own skin tone, and eliminate the need for multiple products. Add a hint of cheek color while you strobe with light flashes of pink, peach or even burgundy. If you’re thinking this sounds like Bobbi Brown’s infamous shimmer brick, you’re along all the right lines

The glory of strobing is that it’s a simplified way to highlight prominent features. For the gal-on-the-go, the strobing trend can also be a real warm-weather godsend. It’s a lightweight solution that helps to use the sun to your advantage. Put on a base layer (or not!), sweep a few shimmery strokes across the face, et voila! Instant, ethereal glow that’s an undeniable essential during the summer social season or just another glorious work day.
