Most of us at this point in the year are pining for the day when we can put the coat to the back of the closet and be done with it—but, alas, the need is still there. The latest of the Spring coat silouettes? The bubble jacket—which is a whole lot prettier than it sounds, generally boasting a traditional trench cut with a full, bubble hem. The look reflects the season’s love of a full skirt, which we’re all about, but there are some things to consider before you make the investment.
One full item per outfit is enough. While full skirts are fabulous this Spring, you won’t want to top them with a bubble jacket—too much of a good thing. Instead, wear this coat over slim pants or a straight skirt to keep from going over the top.
Consider your body type. If you already have a lot of natural fullness on the bottom half, think about whether or not you want to further emphasize that attribute. A great outfit is always about balance—balancing pieces and balancing your figure.
Don’t spend a fortune. This, of course, is always our advice, but particularly when an item is clearly a short-term trend that could easily look dated by next year (or even this fall). If you love it and needed a jacket anyway, go for it—but don’t spend more than $100 for the piece. Our choice? This fresh white version by Coffee Shop at Nordstrom, for $78.
