Paypal’s Back to School Survey

Paypal (read my full disclosure below) recently conducted a survey with Nielsen Media Research on the attitudes and thoughts of parents and kids regarding back to school shopping and fashion. It’s the first time that a non-merchant has conducted a comprehensive survey on back to school shopping trends and I found the findings to be quite interesting.

Some very interesting points:

- 9 out of 10 high school students expect their parents to pay for most, if not all of their back to school purchases
- Kids expect their parents to spend on average $350 on back to school clothing, while parents expect to spend around $250
- Girls take their style cues from traditional pop style icons like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, the Olsen twins while boys take their style cues from celebrities they want to hang out with like P Diddy, Justin Timberlake and Jack Black. KF note: I found this to be a very interesting difference.
- Also, while boys think baggy jeans are cool, parents and, most importantly, girls don’t think they are appropriate.

Full Disclosure: I’m currently working as a paid spokesperson for the Paypal Back to School Campaign. I chose to work with them because I’ve used paypal for years (you guys know how much I love eBay). This post was in no way a requirement of my work with them, however I found some of the findings very interesting, especially the one about what kids expected to spend and what parents want to spend, and I wanted to share them with you.
