Packing for a Summer Getaway: Expert Advice from Style.com’s Laird Borrelli
July 21, 2008 06:00 PM

Packing-for-Vacation

July and August are prime times for taking that much-needed summer getaway, but our least favorite part? Er, packing. Figuring out what to bring is hard enough (especially for any self-respecting fashionista), but with all those extra per-bag charges airlines are imposing these days, we have to watch the bottom line as well. Fortunately, Style.com Senior Fashion Editor Laird Borrelli has agreed to give us a few expert tips on packing efficiently AND on trend. And just in the nick of time . . .

TBF: What pieces are the must-pack items this season?

Laird: A pair of gladiator sandals, a floral dress to wear alone or over pants, a shrunken jacket to layer over things, and a large necklace that can change a simple outfit into a spectacular one and take from into night from day.

TBF:  If I had to choose a color palette to stick with to make packing easier, what should I focus on this season?

Laird: A pop of neon is very of the moment.

TBF:  I can’t afford to go out and buy a bunch of new vacation clothes this summer—how can I make the best use of what I’ve already got and still look great?

Laird: Pack a man’s shirt to wear belted over a bathing suit, or tied at the waist with a pair of must-have full trousers.

TBF:  Shoes are one of the hardest things to pack, since they can take up so much space—what shoes do I absolutely need to take with me this summer, and how can I get the most use out of them?

Laird: Sandals-flat or wedge are the shoe of the season. Flats with dresses (long or short) look really fresh for summer and we saw this combination all throughout the Resort season.

TBF: Any other vacation packing/style tips you’d like to share?

Laird: I always like to pack something unexpected—a favorite candle, a cherished card, or a decoration from my dresser at home that makes unpacking fun and adds a bit of familiarity to a new place.
