Re Post: Are Outlet Malls the Holiday Inn of the Millennum?

Road trips are the quintessential summer adventure. As a kid, each summer my family would pile into the Chevy Cavalier and take road trips to exciting places like Topeka, Kansas and Jonesboro, Arkansas.  No matter where we were going, there was always a Holiday Inn at the next exit. Twenty years later, on my own road trips, I have noticed that Outlet Malls have started to spring up along the roads of America. The New Jersey Turnpike, between Exit 6 (PA Turnpike) and Exit 18 (George Washington Bridge) boasts at least four Outlet Malls, including the mammoth Jersey Garden Mall. Signs for Outlet Malls are sprinkled up and down 95 South. Medford, Minnesota, population 788, even has an outlet mall.

Are Outlet Malls the Holiday Inn of the millennium?

Apparently so.  Retailers have finally figured out what budget fashionistas have known for years- when we are bored, we like to shop and what could possibly be more boring that a five hour trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa? Although the quality of outlet malls varies from interstate to interstate, they are a welcome alternative to urine smelling rest stops.

Prime Outlets in San Marcos, Texas definitely needs to be added to that list.  Lacoste outlet, BCBG and Catherine Malandrino outlet, Coach, Dooney and Bourke, Banana Republic, and JCREW factory stores are my favorite.  My mother likes the Chicos, Coldwater Creek, and Jockey outlets.  And yes, these are all outlets/factory stores, and there are always sales.

For Chicago outlet malls, I much prefer Aurora Premium Outlets to Gurnee Mills.  There are also good outlets in Pleasant Prairie, WI, just a short hike up the road from Gurnee.

It’s not the best outlet mall by a long shot.  But my vote for best location goes to the outlet in Stateline, NV.  It’s perfectly placed on your way between LA and Las Vegas, so we always end up stopping for a bathroom break and a soda and staying too long for a quick look in the stores.  New clubbing clothes on the way to Vegas, and spending any winnings on the way out.  It’s one of the few times I’m a total sucker for impulse purchases because I’m already in the Vegas mindset.

They really should spruce that place up and get a few more premium outlets, because their location choice is impeccable.

I must say that I am surpirsed that none of California’s were mentioned. Vacaville has the Burberry Outlet, Napa, Petaluma and Gilroy deffiently have the Coach, BR, Gap and other various high end clothing. For someone like me who loves to find a bargin, I can be in these cities in no less then a few hours some closer then other’s. The one that I have yet to venture to is Camarillo which has a Juicy Couture and a Besty Johnson Outlet.. ahhh the love for shopping is Grand….

The outlet mall in San Marcos Texas actually consists of two outlet malls, Tanger Outlet and Prime Outlet. To mention of few of my favorites at the Tanger Outlet: Banana Republic, Coldwater Creek, Izod, Bass, Kenneth Cole, Calvin Klein, American Eagle, Nautica, Aldo, Tommy Hilfiger and many other name brand stores.  You can review their list of stores on the Tanger website at  They are soon opening a Sag Harbor and Esprit.
