Mossimo Spring 2009 Collection for Target Offers Affordability, Plus Sizes, and California Chic

Overview: For Spring 2009, Target’s banking again on Mossimo Giannulli’s trademark “fresh” and “no-fuss” style that we’ve all come to expect from the Mossimo line.  Meant to be mixed and matched, easily layered and worn with a casual but feminine air, the 2009 beachwear inspired line has great potential at first glance. Tops are reminiscent of a 60’s inspired glamor (think Mad Men, bold sailor stripes, cardigans, flutter sleeves and fun prints).  Mossimo’s accessories are the most fashion forward in the line;  embracing many of the most popular trends of the last year-gladiator sandals, wide waist belts, bright jewel tones and big beads.

The most enthusiastic designs are the dresses; soft colors such as cobalt blue, bright coral and sunshine yellow, casual knee-length hems, delicate looking fabrics and adorable prints.  Mossimo definitely wants us to ooh-and-ahh about the possibility of layering these pieces with belts, sweaters and jewelry, and the transition from beachy days to breezy nights (and even to work.)

New Plus Size Line: Target recently added the Mossimo for Target Plus Sizes.  (See: Is Plus Size In?No hard news yet on whether this line is simply a plus-size version of the regular line, or something different altogether. Target’s dropped hints that the line, in size 1X through 3X, will include “basic knit tops” that are “revamped with draping, ruching or braided trim,” and “dolman- and flutter-sleeve blouses” which suggests that these pieces are different from the rest of the Spring 2009 women’s products (*sigh*).

Unfortunately, it sounds like they’re going to try to sell us clothes that look like the rest of the plus-size clothes on the market. Yet another store to cross off my list.

It is getting a bit ridiculous. I hate to start any fires but the words ‘separate but equal’ come to mind. Is it really so offensive to a store or designer to simply create the same outfits they put such loving effort into and make the sizes go up to the plus size line? The plus size options invariably all have the same look. Flowy top – in plain and floral pattern, fitted pants – in various blues and blacks, add a t-shirt and that’s it.

At least Mossimo is making a plus size. I need petite sizes and almost no one makes them. I bet Mossimo doesn’t have any pants for the short waisted ladies like me. The petite pants are the first things that sell out when Banana Republic has a sale.

Shopping at Target just hasn’t been the same after Isaac Mizrahi switched over to Liz Claiborne. At first I was upset, but after looking over the new line he put out, I am really impressed. I never thought Liz Claiborne of all brands would have clothes and accessories that I would be interested in, but they do. Its amazing what Isaac has done, just amazing. I believe they have a petite and plus-size line as well. So many cute things!!
