What: Moody Mamas, a high-end maternity line “designed” by Christian Siriano, recently launched in Target stores and on Target.com
What They Say: Moody Mamas and Fierce Mamas are both fashionable and stylish maternity lines that sell to high end boutiques and retailers such as Nordstrom and Harrod’s in London. Being based in Los Angeles has definitely helped us become a favorite of “Hollywood Moms”. Since our launch just over a year ago, we have already garnered a cult following of celebrity mamas such as Heidi Klum, Jessica Alba, Tori Spelling, and Bethenny Frankel from “The Real Housewives of New York City”.
What We Say: The Liz Lange line at Target set the standard for budget friendly stylish maternity options, so we were excited to hear about the Moody Mamas line at Target….That is until we saw the line. The collection is, well, a bit dowdy, especially when compared to the vibrant colors, prints, and flattering cuts of the Liz Lange Line (check out this Liz Lange piece vs this Moody Mamas piece). Also some of the functionality of the pieces don’t quite make sense- like hidden nursing panels on a full fledge maternity dress that will look weird as you start to lose your pregnancy belly. This could be due to the fact that the designers have never been pregnant themselves, which DOES NOT exclude them from designing for moms-to-be, but has had an impact on their actual designs. Our biggest criticism is that we couldn’t find any of Christian Siriano’s, known for his use of bold prints and non-traditional cuts, design imprint in this line (we’re guessing his contract with Payless may limit his involvement with the Target version of the line).
However, we do think the line could turn around, especially if they can get Mr. Siriano to bring some of the “fierceness” from his other labels to this line and focus on upping the style quotient to compete with Liz Lange’s line.
