Looking for a last-minute treat idea for your sweetie? These Valentine’s Day cakes are a terrific and simple confection to make. All you need is a boxed cake mix and some store-bought frosting and decorating gel – no special cake pans required!
Simply prepare a boxed cake mix and spread batter on a buttered 18-by-13-inch rimmed baking sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes, rotating the pan after 10 minutes, until a wooden toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
Let the cake cool, then take a heart-shaped cookie cutter and cut out the hearts. Place separately on another cookie sheet or platter, and place that in the freezer for about 20 minutes, or until firm. This will help the crumbs to stay put on the cakes when you frost them.
Next, frost the cakes, spreading a generous layer of frosting on each one and smoothing as you go to create a flat surface. Then pipe on some Valentines messages with a tube of Wilton Decorating Gel (available at most grocery stores, as well as Michaels and Joann stores), or carve out the message using a wooden skewer.
