Fashion Advice: Maternity Dresses on a Budget

Dear Budget Fashionista,

I really need your help!  I’ve got a family wedding to go to at the end of May, only problem is I’ll be 29 weeks pregnant by then. I’m really struggling on what to wear and where to find it at a reasonable price.

Please help me!

Answer: Congrats and believe it or not you’re in luck. Baby Doll dresses are HOT this season and this style of dress (also sometimes referred to as “empire” waist dresses) works well for those of us who are preggers. Rather than sitting at your natural waist (which probably doesn’t exist at this point) the waist of the dress sits higher- between your belly and your breasts- with the relatively low cut top showing off any newly developed cleavage (while minimizing the appearance of your “bump”).

Maternity Dresses on a Budget

Destination Maternity is perhaps the BEST site for maternity fashions at discount. The clothing is more fashion forward than the basics at Liz Lange for Target and many cost about a 1/10th of the cost of a dress from a higher department store. I LOVE the yellow sheath dress shown above for less than $20 bucks and the stripped dress shown to the left for less than $30. Pair either of these dresses with a fabulous pair of colored wedge sandals for a hip, but comfortable look.

Old Navy Eyelet DressThis sexy, yet sweet white eyelet babydoll dress from Old Navy ($39.50 at Old Navy) is a great option for a summer wedding. You may want to carry a light shrug, just in case your get cold. Add a little color to the outfit by pairing it with a colorful chunky necklace and a pair of comfy wedges.

Belly Basics is a great maternity brand with stylish maternity dresses that cost well under $100.  I love this long navy baby doll dress with salmon and baby blue colored blocking ($92 at, which reminds of something Michael Kors would design if he had a maternity line.

Pea In a Pod isn’t exactly a “budget friendly” shop, but this 100% silk baby doll dress is both sexy and comfortable at a price under $100.  Add a cute pair of white sandals from Target or Payless and you have a fabulous outfit for $100.

If you don’t mind second hand clothing, search for clothing at hefy discount from big time maternity wear designers like Liz Lange’s higher priced line, Olian, Momzee, Cadeau, BellyBasics, etc on eBay. Many new mothers sell their maternity clothing online, so it’s a great resource for budget friendly maternity wear.
