Timing: 60 days (with exceptions)

Most items you purchase in a JC Penney store or at jcpenney.com are eligible for return or exchange within 60 days of the purchase date. There are some exceptions however:

  • Special orders or personalized items cannot be returned.
  • Fitness trackers and smart watches must be returned within 10 days, with a receipt.
  • Jewelry boxes, electronics, small electrics, furniture, innovative gifts, some home items (like air purifiers) and personal care items must be returned within 30 days, with a receipt.
  • Custom blinds, shades, shutters, etc. can only be cancelled within 24 hours of the original order.
  • Fitness equipment must be returned within 48 hours.
  • Mattresses must be returned with 120 days of delivery. You’ll be charged a 20% restocking fee and an $85 pickup fee. If you select another mattress, the restocking fee is lowered to 15% and the pickup fee is waived.

JC Penney does have an extended holiday return window. You can return purchases made on or after October 15, 2023 with an original or gift receipt through January 15, 2024.

Refund Eligibility: Keep your receipt

In most cases, you need an original receipt or packing slip to be eligible for a full refund. And, as usual, make sure the item is still in new condition. Don’t wear it, wash it, or remove the tags.

If you don’t have a receipt, you may be eligible for store credit (in the form of a return voucher). The amount will be that item’s lowest selling price in the last 45 days. You will need to show a valid photo ID.

JC Penney uses a third-party service to monitor return activity. If you’re frequently returning items without a receipt, you may be denied store credit.

Budget Fashionista Tip: Get coupon codes now with Capital One shopping. Here's how.

Return shipping fee: $8

You can always return your items in store for free. If you mail your items back using JC Penney’s UPS label, $8 will be deducted from your refund for return shipping.

Larger items may be subject to a 15% restocking fee and an $85 pickup fee.

Note that any shipping and handling you paid on the original order is nonrefundable.

Refunds: Back to original form of payment (usually)

Most refunds go back to the original form of payment within four days from when JC Penney receives the merchandise. If you paid by PayPal, you’ll get cash back for in-store returns and a check for mailed returns.

Some returns are refunded via a JC Penney gift card. Lower your chances of this happening by keeping the tags on your merchandise and holding onto all receipts, invoices, packing slips, etc.

Exchanges

Exchanges are processed free in stores.

Here’s how to return your merchandise to JC Penney.

  • Gather up the item, your receipt/packing slip, and any packaging, including the shipping box if you ordered online.
  • Find your nearest store. If you can, take your return in person to a store. This way, you avoid the return shipping fee.
  • If you can’t take the item to a store, log into your account at jcpenney.com. Tap Start a Return and follow the prompts.
  • Pack up your merchandise, apply JC Penney’s UPS label and ship it off.

I have a comforter that is a little over a year old - I paid $300 for it - and also bought sheets, throw pillows at the same time. The comforter has never been washed or dry cleaned; however, the "fill" of the comforter has shifted and I now have several lumps - I am extremely disappointed with this comforter and it looks horrible on the bed. I feel that the store should stand behind the quality of the spread. I'd like to return it to the store where it was purchased, and I feel that I should be compensated in some way. Please advise. P.S. I purchased a "bed in a bag" from TJ Maxx about 10 years ago - comforter, shams, sheets, dust ruffle - the comforter is still in perfect condition - ? I paid $50 for that bed in a bag.
