The Indecent Proposal Dress

This post may contain affiliate links*

A reader submitted this question which has really stumped me. Who designed Demi Moore’s black strappy dress from Indecent Proposal? If you can answer this, I will send you a big ole cyber hug.

Now, I really should know this answer, because in 11th grade there was this really big issue at my high school’s homecoming dance because five girls arrived wearing this very same dress. Two of the girls were friends and not exactly the nicest people (think ‘Mean Girls’ squared). One of the five spent the evening in the bathroom crying and the other four spent the rest of the night exchanging ugly stares.  I remember this incident as one of the highlights of my otherwise boring high school years.

Who designed the Indecent Proposal Dress

We put the question out to our readers to get the answer. Thanks to everyone who responded to my question “who’s the designer of the Demi Moore Indecent Proposal Dress?”

The designer of the dress worn by Demi Moore in Indecent Proposal is Thierry Mugler. Mugler rose to fame as a designer in the 1980s after working as a freelance designer for ready-to-wear fashion houses in Paris, Milan, London, and Barcelona. Known for his dramatic and futuristic designs, Mugler became a favorite among supermodels and A-listers like Cindy Crawford and George Michael. His brand was financially successful through the ’90s, with the help of its wildly popular perfume known as Angel.

What happened to the Indecent Proposal dress designer?

Clarins bought the rights to his name Thierry Mugler in 1997. Five years later, Clarins shut down the Thierry Mugler ready-to-wear collection — the perfume operation was left open. By then, Thierry the designer had distanced himself from the brand that shared his name. He got involved in other things, including photography, directing music videos, and designing costumes for stage productions and touring musicians.

Today, he goes by his first name Manfred — to differentiate himself the person from Thierry Mugler the brand. And the brand has evolved too. A cosmetics line was launched in 2008, a revival of the menswear collection in 2010, and the name was shortened to Mugler, also in 2010.

In 2019, Cardi B wore “Birth of Venus,” a dress designed by Manfred in 1995.

More dresses by Mugler

Although these pieces weren’t actually designed by Manfred, they do carry the Mugler brand name. And, oddly enough, they have that same futuristic vibe that drew us to the Indecent Proposal dress back in 1993. Oh, and you will get sticker shock looking at these high-end pieces. Consider yourself warned.

If these are out of your budget, but you still want a piece of that Indecent Proposal Mugler magic, pick up an Angel perfuming brush. It’s only $28!

I highly doubt that 5 high schoolgirls wore the same dress..unless you went to a private prep school in new York city and 5 girls could afford a coustom designed Mugler dress.
