43 Best Online Women’s Clothing Stores When You’re on a Budget

You probably have your go-to clothing stores. But sometimes you need to shop something new, yes? I hope this list of the 43 best online women’s clothing stores will come in handy.

The amazing rise of online clothing stores selling fast fashion — you know, cheap, trendy garments made to be worn one season only — has made it tough to be a budget fashionista. I say that because a budget fashionista is not the gal who buys on price alone.

Smiling, trendy woman uses laptop to shop best online women's clothing stores.

A true budget fashionista shops for value. You’re more interested in the $50 top you’ll wear 10 times, versus the $20 top you’ll wear once.

So all of those ultra-cheap retailers are cluttering the landscape, tempting us with their low-cost garments that may or may not be wearable in three months. On top of that trend, we’re also dealing with the slow disappearance of brick-and-mortar department stores.

& Other Stories has a sophisticated, understated vibe. In the brand’s stores and online, you can find elegant classics like high-waisted trousers, linen tops, and beautifully floral maxi dresses.

  • Prices: $30 for accessories, up to $200 for garments.
  • Shipping: Free shipping if you are logged in.
  • Perks: Free returns within 30 days (except items marked as Final Sale which are not returnable), chic styling, commitment to sustainability.
  • Downside: Prices are at the high end for a budget shopper. Stick to the sale pages.

Amazon

More and more, I find myself clothes shopping on Amazon. It’s hard not to love the endless selection of women’s clothes, accessories, and shoes. You can find nearly anything at almost any price point. And then there’s Try Before You Buy — the option to order a box full of clothes and only pay for the items you keep.

The drawback of shopping Amazon for clothes is that you can easily get lost in the search. Scroll 20 pages in and you could forget what you were looking for. My fix is to start on the Amazon Fashion page — from there, you can jump right into edited collections.

  • Prices: all over the place, from ultra cheap to high-end.
  • Shipping: Usually free if you are a Prime member.
  • Perks: Try Before You Buy, massive selection, easy returns.
  • Downside: Inconsistent quality.

Ann Taylor

Ann Taylor probably needs no introduction. The label has been around since 1954, selling smart corporate wear for women. True, the brand has lost its luster in recent years due to a bankruptcy of the parent company and resulting ownership change. But the store is still a top destination for check blazers, tweed separates, and sheath dresses.

  • Prices: Full-priced items are $80 to $250.
  • Shipping: Free shipping if your order total is $150 or more.
  • Perks: Good destination for work wear.
  • Downside: Pricey for everyday garments.

Anthropologie

I’d describe Anthropologie’s signature style as quirky sophistication. So many of their garments are stylish enough to carry an outfit on their own. Pair an Anthropologie blouse with jeans and leather sandals and you’re chic enough to feel like an off-duty actress, for example.

The regular prices reach up into the triple digits, but the sale prices hover between $40 and $80 per garment.

  • Prices: Full-priced items are $100 to $200.
  • Shipping: Free shipping if your order total is $50 or more.
  • Perks: Reliable destination for upgraded basics with an edge.
  • Downside: Pricey for everyday garments.

ASOS

There are so many reasons to love ASOS. The selection suits any budget and any shape. You can shop collections for talls, petites, plus, and maternity. The styles are always on point. Though some lean towards the younger set, you can definitely find appropriate pieces for any age.

I own a gorgeous faux suede trench coat in baby blue from ASOS. It’s one of my favorite garments for spring.

  • Prices: Full-priced items are $20 to $150.
  • Shipping: Free shipping if your order total is $50 or more.
  • Perks: 10% student discount, massive selection, always on trend
  • Downside: Shipping to the U.S. is slow.

Shop ASOS.

Banana Republic

Banana Republic is highest-end member of the Gap family. And the brand isn’t just for tasteful women’s wear either. While you’re shopping for classy midi skirts, drape tops, and work trousers, you can also buy menswear, kids’ clothes, and home decor.

  • Prices: Full-priced items are $50 to $300.
  • Shipping: Free shipping if you are a rewards member and your order total is $50 or more.
  • Perks: Rewards program includes Gap, Old Navy, and Athleta.
  • Downside: Pricey! Shop the sale pages.

Shop Banana Republic.

Belk

Belk is like Kohl’s — you can shop for luggage, home decor, and fashion. The selection is extensive, so you might need to hunt to find what you want.

  • Prices: Regular prices on women’s clothes are $50 and up, but there are sales and coupons that’ll bring these prices down.
  • Shipping: Shipping is free if you spend $75+.
  • Perks: Department store selection, which includes clothes for the entire family plus beauty and home goods. Find brands you know, too, including Sanctuary, Sam Edelman, Philosophy, and Lauren Ralph Lauren.
  • Downside: The return shipping fee is $9.95.

Shop Belk.

Bluefly

Bluefly caters to high-fashion tastes, but oh those sales! When you’re looking for something truly special and a little splurge-y, something that gives you the opportunity to drop a designer name, then Bluefly is your shop.

  • Prices: Full-priced items are $100 to $1,000. Sale prices can be 50% to 70% lower.
  • Shipping: Standard shipping is $7.95 or more, depending on the option you want.
  • Perks: Desigher pieces and great sales.
  • Downside: Return window is a short 14 days and there’s a return fee of $12.95.

Shop Bluefly.

Boohoo

Boohoo has been described as the U.K. version of Forever 21. The collection is bold, sexy, and cheap. Not that everything on the site is revealing of course. I’m eyeballing a royal blue quilted shacket on the site right now for £45.

  • Prices: Many tops, pants, and dresses priced below $60.
  • Shipping: Standard shipping to U.S. is $9.99.
  • Perks: Collections for plus, petite, tall, maternity, and bridal. Huge selection. Great sales. Student discount. You can shop by size.
  • Downside: U.S. orders have a return fee of $6.

Shop Boohoo U.S.

Chico’s Off The Rack

Chico’s Off The Rack is Chico’s outlet store. Chico’s has a reputation for being matronly, but the collection doesn’t reflect that *anymore*. Having said that, you won’t find bandage dresses or backless tops. But you will find pretty sweaters, cardigans, dresses, scarves, and jewelry.

And, this being an outlet store, the prices are reasonable. As always, check the sale page first.

  • Prices: Most full-priced items are $20 to $100.
  • Shipping: Free shipping over $100.
  • Perks: Great sales, free curbside and in-store pickup.
  • Downside: Selection isn’t as broad as our other online store picks.

Shop Chico’s Off The Rack.

COS

COS is a midrange online shop with an elevated collection and a stunningly beautiful website. It feels like you’re flipping through the pages of a high-end fashion magazine. Look for classically styled basics made of sustainably sourced materials. This is a destination for investment pieces for sure.

  • Prices: Jewelry and belts can be $50 to $100, while pants, blazers, and sweaters are $150 to $250.
  • Shipping: Economy shipping is free.
  • Perks: Free returns. Beautiful and well-made pieces.
  • Downside: Most items are not budget-friendly.

Shop COS.

Eloquii

Eloquii is a plus-size retailer with a collection that’s both sexy and modest, thanks to curve-hugging shapes that are classy, even elegant. Shop Eloquii for everything from flirty club tops to the work blazer you wear when you want to impress.

Collections include dresses, tops, bottoms, outwear, career wear, swim, accessories, and bridal.

  • Prices: Regular prices on blazers, dresses, pants, and tops range from $70 to $120.
  • Shipping: Shipping is $7.95 or free if you spend $125 or more.
  • Perks: Great styling. Made for plus-size.
  • Downside: Can be pricey.

Shop Eloquii.

Everlane

Everlane makes quality basics while focusing on ethical manufacturing and the use of sustainable materials. On every product page, you can see the cost of the product — well, the cost for Everlane and the price for you.

Everlane shares its cost broken down by materials, hardware, labor, duties, and transport. You can add those components up and decide if the item is priced fairly. Note that the business functions of Everlane (marketing, website management) are not included in the pricing breakdown.

  • Prices: Most pieces are priced between $100 and $200.
  • Shipping: “No Rush” shipping is $4.95 or free if you spend $100 or more.
  • Perks: Classically styled pieces made of quality materials.
  • Downside: While the company’s transparency and business model are admirable, the prices are steep for the average shopper. Mailed returns have a $7 label fee.

Shop Everlane.

Express

Express has been a reliable source of business casual fashion for years. Every time I walk into an Express store, I’m sort of shocked by how expensive the pieces are. $80 for a pair of work pants, for example, is a little steep in my book. But then I’ve never been disappointed with the quality of a garment from Express either. Get the best of both worlds by shopping the sales only.

  • Prices: You’ll spend $30 on t-shirts and $80+ on jeans and bottoms.
  • Shipping: Free shipping if you’re an A-list credit card holder. Otherwise, standard shipping is $8.
  • Perks: Good styling and fit. Men’s and women’s collection. Students get 5% off.
  • Downside: Pricey for everyday garments.

Shop Express.

Fenwick

Fenwick is a British department store that prioritizes luxury. That means the store primarily carries designer labels and the prices are higher as a result. If you’re in the market for investment pieces, try shopping a Fenwick designer sale to bring the outlay down to a more reasonable level.

If you live in the U.K., you can shop Fenwick for women’s clothes, of course, but also beauty, men’s, shoes, kids clothes, furniture, and more.

  • Prices: Unless there’s a sale, it’s tough to find anything at Fenwick for less than £100. Prepare for price points of £180 or more.
  • Shipping: Fenwick only ships to addresses in the U.K. Shipping is free on orders £50 or more.
  • Perks: Designer pieces, bra fittings, and a program to upcycle clothes you no longer want.
  • Downside: Designer prices.

Shop Fenwick.

Forever 21

Forever 21 gets flack, and some of it’s well-deserved. But my two biggest complaints about Forever21 actually don’t apply to the website shopping experience. First, the in-store returns policy is restrictive and, secondly, the store is usually a mess.

Things are different online, though! Online purchases can be returned for exchange, credit or refund within 30 days. And the website doesn’t have to worry about sloppy display tables.

  • Prices: You can buy earrings for $10, tops for $20, and pants for $30 or $40.
  • Shipping: Shipping is free if you spend $50+.
  • Perks: Trendy clothes at cheap prices. There is a plus-size collection, plus options for men and kids.
  • Downside: Styles are very youthful. Fit and quality can be inconsistent. There is a return fee of $5.99.

Shop Forever 21.

Frank and Oak

Frank and Oak is a sustainable Canadian brand with modern collections for women and men. Seasonal collections lean into subtle styling for pieces that are interesting without being too flashy. Solid colors, quality fabrics, and reliable silhouettes are mostly what you’ll find.

  • Prices: You can buy tank tops for $40, and most other pieces for $50 to $100.
  • Shipping: Shipping is free on orders $50 or more before taxes.
  • Perks: The brand’s sustainable slant combined with reasonable prices makes for a store you can feel good about. Shop men’s and women’s garments, plus shoes, hats, and bags.
  • Downside: The collections could be larger.

Shop Frank and Oak.

Gap

Gap is the “better” brand in the Old Navy (good) and Banana Republic (best) family. In recent years, I’ve grown to appreciate Gap for affordable clothes that fit and last. Generally, Old Navy duds have great prices but they’re not as solid. And Banana Republic has great styling but the prices give me pause.

Last year, I bought three colors in the same twill pant from Gap because they’re so versatile. Gap is a store to shop for reliable classics that won’t kill your budget.

  • Prices: Most items are priced $30 to $100. Regular sales bring the prices down.
  • Shipping: Basic shipping is $7 or free for loyalty members who spend $50 or more.
  • Perks: Shop Gap for men’s, women’s, kids, baby, and maternity. Good value.
  • Downside: The website can be overwhelming due to the large number of product categories.

Shop Gap.

H&M

H&M has the same value proposition as Forever 21: current styles at low prices. I prefer H&M, though, because there are better options for women over the age of 25. You can buy low-cost work clothes, summer dresses, plus basics. I like to shop H&M once annually to stock up on t-shirts and tanks.

  • Prices: You can buy skirts and pants for $30 or $40, t-shirts for $20 or less, and coats for $50+.
  • Shipping: Shipping is free if you spend $40+.
  • Perks: Trendy clothes at cheap prices. Students get a discount. You can shop women’s, men’s, kids’, and home.
  • Downside: Shipping and handling costs are not refundable.

Shop H&M.

J. Crew Factory

J. Crew Factory is, as you might guess, the official outlet store for J. Crew. The store sells J. Crew’s preppy, well-made garments at lower prices. Shop J. Crew Factory for jeans, sweaters, blazers, and coats that are marked down about 40%.

  • Prices: Blazers are $80 to $130, jeans are around $50 and sweaters are $50 to $70.
  • Shipping: Standard shipping is $7 or free if you spend $99 or more.
  • Perks: J. Crew pieces generally have the quality and styling to qualify as “investment pieces.”
  • Downside: It is an outlet store, so the selection can be inconsistent.

Shop J. Crew Factory.

Kohl’s

Kohl’s is a budget-friendly department store that’s fond of aggressive discounts and cashback rewards known as Kohl’s Cash. Sometimes I wonder this retailer stays in business, because if you time your purchases right, you pay very little and get Kohl’s Cash to spend later.

  • Prices: Most pieces for women are $20 to $60.
  • Shipping: Shipping is $8.95 or free if you spend $49 or more.
  • Perks: Kohl’s cash and aggressive sales! One-stop shop for clothes, beauty, and home goods.
  • Downside: Selection and quality can be inconsistent from one season to the next. The sale messaging on the website is overwhelming.

Shop Kohl’s.

LOFT

LOFT of course is Ann Taylor’s little sis and we love it for the same reasons we love Ann Taylor. The collection is classy and wearable. As with Ann Taylor, you can sign up for their emails to save $25.

  • Prices: Full-priced items are mostly $50 to $150.
  • Shipping: Standard shipping is free on $99+.
  • Perks: Easy, wearable styles and frequent sales.
  • Downside: You pay a return shipping fee of $8.95 if you mail in unwanted items.

Shop LOFT.

Poll: Where do you shop?

Lulu’s

Lulu’s has a high-fashion feel to it, without the high-fashion prices. New Arrivals are usually priced between $40 and $80, and you can find amazing deals on the Lulu’s sale page. Another perk is that Lulu’s carries formal dresses and jumpsuits (along with swimwear, shoes and accessories). It’s one of the first online stores I check when I have a special event on the calendar.

  • Prices: Prices range from $40 to $80.
  • Shipping: Free shipping over $50 (as of January, 2023).
  • Perks: Great sales, huge selection of chic styles.
  • Downside: Models are thin, young, and gorgeous, which can be intimidating.

Shop Lulu’s.

Macy’s

Macys.com cycles through sales and promotions almost constantly. You could sign up for their emails to stay informed, but honestly, that gets to be overwhelming. Instead, make a habit of going to Macys.com first when you know exactly what you need — it’ll only take a minute to see if that perfect piece just happens to be on sale.

  • Prices: Prices are all over the place due to the size of the selection. Make it a habit to shop the sales only, because the price of garments can change dramatically overnight.
  • Shipping: Free shipping if you spend $49+. Silver and Bronze members of Star Rewards get free shipping at $25, while Platinum and Gold members always get free shipping.
  • Perks: Massive selection. You can shop for the whole family and decorate your house.
  • Downside: It can be hard to find what you want in the online store.

Shop Macy’s.

Missguided

As the name implies, Missguided leans into edgy, sexy fashion. If you’re in Europe and you need hot bodycon, this is your place to shop online. (You can shop Missguided from the U.S., but you’ll pay a higher shipping fee and wait a little longer for your garments to arrive.)

  • Prices: Full-priced garments mostly cost £30 to £60, but sales can be extreme (like up to 80% off).
  • Shipping: Shipping to U.S. costs £8.33 and takes 3 to 21 days.
  • Perks: Great sales and trendy, youthful fashion.
  • Downside: Shipping to the U.S. is slow and pricey.

Shop Missguided.

Modcloth

Modcloth describes itself as a vintage fashion store, but you don’t need to own cat-eye sunnies to shop there. Styles are a tad funkier than you’ll find on Dorothy Perkins, but in a good way. If you have a streak of quirky, you’ll love Modcloth.

  • Prices: Full-priced items are typically between $40 and $150.
  • Shipping: Free shipping over $150.
  • Perks: Fun, vintage-inspired style, plus sizes.
  • Downside: Models are thin, young, and gorgeous, which can be intimidating.

Shop Modcloth.

Nasty Gal

Nasty Gal is for the younger (at heart or by the clock), edgier fashionista. This online store carries its own Nasty Gal line, plus designs from Bardot, Glamorous, Jaded London and Love, Courtney by Nasty Gal. Check the sales often for fashion finds under $15.

  • Prices: Regular prices are $50 and up, but frequent sales make this online shop more affordable.
  • Shipping: Standard shipping is $11.99.
  • Perks: Edgy style and great sales. Shop Nastygal for clubwear.
  • Downside: Expensive to ship, many styles are too racy for most women to wear.

Shop Nasty Gal.

Nordstrom

Nordstrom has three big sales every year: the Anniversary Sale in July and the Half-Yearly Sale in the spring and fall. Get those on your calendar! That’s when you’ll want to refresh your bras, underwear, and seasonal pieces.

  • Prices: Normal prices start around $40 for a garment and go up from there.
  • Shipping: Free shipping to everyone, all the time.
  • Perks: Unbeatable customer service and good selection of quality brands. Lots of customer reviews provide the inside story on garment quality and fit.
  • Downside: Regular prices are on the high side and the store only hosts three big sales a year.

Shop Nordstrom.

Nordstrom Rack

Nordstrom Rack sells designer finds on a budget. The online store has many sorting and filtering options that make it easy to find what you need, so it earned a place on this list.

My caveat is that I’ve found Nordstrom Rack less and less interesting in recent years. I’m not sure if my tastes have changed or the store’s collection has deterioriated. I often have better luck just waiting for a sale from Macy’s or Nordstrom.

  • Prices: Regular prices on pants and skirts start at $50 and go up — but this store has sales often. Shop the sales for tops in the $20 and dresses for $50.
  • Shipping: Shipping is free if you spend $89+.
  • Perks: Good sales. Website is easy to shop.
  • Downside: The collection is inconsistent and the free shipping theshold is high.

Shop Nordstrom Rack.

Old Navy

Old Navy is a go-to for basics. Whether you need to round out your summer t-shirt collection, add a few budget-friendly sweaters to your rotation, or stock up on leggings, Old Navy has you covered.

True story: I went on a two-week trip and realized a few days in that I did not pack enough stuff. I wanted more options but I did not want to blow my budget. I went straight to Old Navy and picked up what I needed for less than $100.

  • Prices: Regular prices on women’s clothes range from $15 to $60.
  • Shipping: Shipping is free if you are a loyalty member and you spend $50+.
  • Perks: Great sales. Good selection of low-cost activewear.
  • Downside: The website bombards you with sale notifications.

Shop Old Navy.

Saks Off Fifth

Saks Off Fifth is the same concept as Nordstrom Rack, but one step up. Shop Prada, Oscar de la Renta, Alexander McQueen, Versace, and more. Start with the clearance page first for your best online deals.

  • Prices: Garment prices lean higher at Saks Off Fifth, say $60 for blouses and $100 for pants. The collection is largely good quality though.
  • Shipping: Shipping is free if you spend $129+.
  • Perks: Stylish designer pieces and a preowned section with steeper discounts. Good destination for special occasion garments.
  • Downside: The prices, though heavily discounted, may still be outside your budget. You may have to hunt for pieces that are wearable.

Shop Saks Off Fifth clearance.

Target

We can’t leave Target off this list! Target.com has an enormous selection, and I’m often surprised by the goods you can pick up for the price. Like H&M, Target is a great destinations for basics like v-neck t-shirts, socks, etc. But don’t overlook the tops and sweaters, which can be great finds.

  • Prices: Garment prices are generally $50 or less.
  • Shipping: Two-day shipping is free if you spend $35+ or use your RedCard.
  • Perks: Fabulous, budget-friendly basics. One-stop shop — buy clothes, beauty, gifts, small appliances in one visit.
  • Downside: You won’t find a lot of super-trendy pieces at Target. The collection leans more towards tried-and-true basics.

Shop Target.

T.J.Maxx

The T.J.Maxx website delivers on the “brand name for less” promise perhaps better than the store itself. I love that you can filter search results by your size, so you’re only seeing stuff that *should* fit. Too bad they can’t organize the store that way!

  • Prices: Garment prices are mostly $30 to $60. You’ll see some pieces priced higher, such as full-length puffer coats.
  • Shipping: Free shipping if you spend $89+.
  • Perks: Designer goods for less. Free returns within 40 days.
  • Downside: If you set your size in the filter and then switch the collection (say, from sweaters to pants), you have to reset your size choice.

Shop TJMaxx online.

TOBI

TOBI styling is in the same vein as Nasty Gal. The targeted clientele is definitely the younger fashionista who’s confident enough to show some skin. Still, you can find some good buys that are also modest if you’re willing to spend the time. Shop the sales here — as they come fast and furious, so you don’t need to pay full price.

  • Prices: Regular prices are $50 and up, but frequent sales make this online shop more affordable.
  • Shipping: Free standard shipping to the U.S. if your order is $75 or more.
  • Perks: Extreme sales, such as 50% off everything. Free returns (for store credit) if you return the item within 10 days of delivery date.
  • Downside: You need to login to shop. Styles can be too racy for most women.

Shop TOBI.

Uniqlo

Uniqlo’s motto is “simple made better.” The Uniqlo collection is consistent in style and pricing — you’ll find pieces that are very wearable and affordable. From $60 down jackets to $15 bras, pieces in the Uniqlo collection can fill almost any fashion void you have.

  • Prices: Garments are priced from $40 to $100.
  • Shipping: Free standard shipping on $100+.
  • Perks: Shop for the whole family. Good source for basics. In-store pickup.
  • Downside: Limited selection of plus sizes online. (For better options there, see our post on best plus-size clothing stores.)

Shop Uniqlo.

Venus

I wasn’t a fan of Venus.com a few years ago, but it’s grown on me. The collection is fashion-forward without being scandalous — a combination I appreciate as an older fashionista. You can find pieces like a red houndstooth coat, sophisticated high-waist trousers, casual hoodies, jeans, and more. The New Arrivals are priced between $40 and $60, and sale prices dip into the teens and $20s.

  • Prices: $30 for t-shirts, $30 to $50 for blouses and tops, and $50 to $80 for pants and dresses.
  • Shipping: Free standard shipping on $75+.
  • Perks: Good balance of value and style.
  • Downside: The website’s menu is overwhelming.

Shop Venus.

Yoox

Head to Yoox when you need a label to show off. Jil Sander, Marni, Prada and Rochas are a few of the designer names that grace the pages of Yoox.com. These are spendy garments for sure, but sign up for the sale emails and you may snag a great piece at a steep discount.

  • Prices: Normal prices rarely dip below $100. You could spend thousands, depending on the piece and label you’re after.
  • Shipping: Free shipping if you spend $250+.
  • Perks: Good source for discounted designer pieces. Also carries men’s and kid’s clothes.
  • Downside: New Arrivals are way too expensive for normal people.

Shop Yoox.

Zara

Zara is a leader in the fast-fashion segment. The chain reportedly brings new styles to market as quickly as five weeks (and restocks stores twice weekly). That means you can expect the latest styles to get to Zara’s website quickly.

  • Prices: Full-priced items are $30 to $150.
  • Shipping: Free shipping if your order total is $70 or more.
  • Perks: Trendy, budget-friendly styles.
  • Downside: Because garments are so “current,” they may have a short lifespan

Shop Zara.

Pretty Little Thing

Pretty Little Thing is another ultra-trendy store with casual styles and affordable prices. This online store is a great place to upgrade your street style game with sexy joggers and slinky crop tops.

  • Prices: Many tops, pants, and dresses priced below $50.
  • Shipping: Shipping to the U.S. is $5.
  • Perks: Collections for curvy, petite, tall, and maternity. Huge selection. Great sales.
  • Downside: You pay return shipping. There are far fewer options for the older fashionista.

Shop Pretty Little Thing U.S.

About those super-bargain retailers

There’s also a whole community of ultra-bargain retailers. We’d put these in the ‘fast fashion’ category. Yes, the prices are unbelievably low. Some of the styles are super cute. But quality and sizing may be inconsistent. Proceed at your own risk:

I appreciate these links! I just turned 50, and while I don't want to be frumpy, I also don't want to dress like a twenty-something. Earlier this year, I found Mandy's Heaven, a family-run British company that has expanded to the U.S., and I *love* the styles and affordability!! They also have fantastic customer service!!
