How to Shop Walgreens Online

Back in the prehistoric era, this post was titled how to shop Drugstore.com. And yes, I’m dating Budget Fashionista and myself — because Walgreens purchased Drugstore.com way back in 2011. So long ago!

The acquisition set Walgreens back $409 million. That was a lot of dough for Walgreens, but the deal included drugstore.com, beauty.com, skinstore.com, and visiondirect.com.

A quick five years later, Walgreens announced its intention to shut down drugstore.com and beauty.com. By this time, Walgreens had already purchased its rival drugstore chain Rite Aid and Almus Pharmaceutical. The drugstore.com portfolio of websites were no longer priorities for the mega chain.

And so we said goodbye to drugstore.com and beauty.com in 2016. Given that no one needs to know how to shop drugstore.com, I’m reinventing this post to share Walgreens online shopping tips. Ready to jump in?

1. Get organized for free shipping

Sadly, Amazon has taught us (or me anyway) that we don’t need to be organized about shopping. It’s tough to admit, but I’m guilty of placing multiple Amazon orders in the same week because I didn’t make a list.

If you do that with Walgreens.com you’ll pay for shipping. The order threshold to get free shipping is low at $35. (You can also get free shipping by including a prescription or contact lenses in your order, even if the total is less than $35.) But if you’re dropping into Walgreens website to restock your Aveeno moisturizer, you can easily fall short of the $35 threshold.

Here are the takeaways. To get free shipping:

  • Add some personal items to your order when you refill prescriptions.
  • Or, make sure your order totals $35 or more.
  • Don’t buy anything heavy online. Walgreens adds shipping fees when your order totals more than 20 pounds, even if you spent more than $35.

2. Ship to store

You can also have many items on Walgreens.com shipped to your local store for free. The main things that aren’t eligible for free shipping to your store are oversized goods and photo products. Check the shipping section of the product page to verify eligibility.

If the item you want is in stock, shipping to your local store takes less than a week. Walgreens will send you an email when your order is ready for pickup at the photo counter. The store will also hold the item for you for up to 21 days. (If you don’t pick it up, Walgreens returns the item and processes a refund.)

3. Try same-day delivery

If you have a lipstick or nail polish emergency, you ask Walgreens to deliver your Walgreens.com or Walgreens app order within one hour. The driver will leave the order at your door, so it’s contactless and you don’t need to be home.

There is a fee for same-day delivery, and it varies by store. Walgreens does sometimes offer free same-day delivery with a minimum order size. Right now (fall of 2021), you can get free same-day delivery on orders of $50 or more.

Note that you cannot have prescriptions or alcohol delivered.

4. Know the return policy

Generally, you must return unwanted items within 30 days of purchase. You can get a deeper dive into Walgreens return policy here.

5. Check the homepage for sales

Whatever online sale Walgreens has going at any given time will be promoted on the website’s homepage. Check the top bar and then scroll down to look for any large banners.

As an example, in fall of 2021, Walgreens.com is running a 15% off purchases of $40 or more with code SAVE15.

6. Use the Walgreens app to clip coupons

You can also download the Walgreens app to find more savings opportunities. Use the app to access Walgreens weekly ad and click coupons. If you also shop in the Walgreens store, you can use the app to scan products and search for coupons.

7. Join myWalgreens

myWalgreens is a two-tier loyalty program. The lower tier is mostly what you’d expect — earn 1% cash rewards on each $1 you spend. You can bump up your cash rewards with Walgreens-branded products, though. Those are worth 5% cash back.

The higher tier is a richer level, but you must have a Walgreens Mastercard. Shop with the credit card and you earn 10% cashback on Walgreens-branded products, plus 3% on beauty and grocery purchases at any store. You can sync your iPhone Health app to earn extra rewards for meeting health goals.
