Many retailers that operate physical stores and ecommerce websites have two separate return policies. Nordstrom, thankfully, does not. The retailer has long been known for its generous policy with respect to returns, and that has not changed in the digital era.

You have two choices when you want to return something to Nordstrom. Whether you bought the item in a store or from Nordstrom.com, you can do one of the following:

1. Return the item to a Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack store

Walk into a Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack store, find any register or the customer service window. You should receive your refund in five to seven days.

The only items you can’t return to a Nordstrom Rack store are fine jewelry and designer pieces bought from Nordstrom or Nordstrom.com.

2. Return the item by mail

To mail your item, process your return online first here. You’ll receive a prepaid shipping label by email. If you don’t have a printer, you can take the digital return code to the USPS or Fedex location and they will print the label for you.

It can take up to two weeks to process your mailed-in return. You should receive the refund to the original form of payment three to five days after processing.

Do I need a receipt to return something to Nordstrom?

Woman shopping in clothing store.

Nordstrom does not require a receipt, but things go more smoothly if you have one. Nordstrom has a “customer is always right” policy, meaning there are no documented rules you have to follow to get a return. Instead the retailer evaluates and approves each return individually.

That policy sounds nice in theory, but here’s what it really means: Whether you can successfully return your item without a receipt depends on the decision-maker’s mood that day. I say this because I once had trouble returning a gift item. The representative actually implied that I had stolen it. True story! I got mad and loud, and then she acquiesced and processed my return.

The takeaway is this. Keep your receipt. It just makes things easier.

If you don’t have the receipt and the store representative can’t find any record of the sale, your return my be declined. If it’s not declined, you’ll be refunded the item’s current price with a Nordstrom Gift Card.

What should I do if I don’t have the receipt?

Bring your photo ID and, if possible, the credit card you used to buy the item.

What if I took the tags off the garment? Can I still return it?

You may be able to return something even if you removed the tags — unless it’s a special occasion dress. These pieces usually have a note on the tags stating the item is not returnable if the tags are detached.

You can find the official Nordstrom return policy here.
