Walking around with your pants unzipped is super awkward — not only for you, but for everyone else around. No one wants to stare, or even tell you that your fly is down. Kids might point and laugh. Hopefully, you have a good friend nearby who can lean in and subtly tell you that you’re exposed.

Sometimes you just forget to pull your zipper up and sometimes you’ve got a loose zipper that just won’t stay up. I can’t help you remember all of the tasks involved in using the ladies room, but I sure can tell you how to keep your pants zipper up. Here are two strategies that will work.

How to Keep Your Pants Zipper Up

1. Pull the zipper handle down

I learned this zipper trick from my friend Malinda. Malinda and I have been best friends for 20 years — she was the maid of honor at my wedding and the only person I know daring enough to have a conversation with the Falun Gong folks wearing a Vivienne Tam Chairman Mao shirt. She and I could debate for hours on the merits of clothing rental or which are the best trendy shops online for women.

So when she headed for my crotch and zipped up my pants, I wasn’t offended. In fact, when she showed me that pulling the little zipper handle down locks the zipper in place, thus reducing the likelihood for future crotch treks on my behalf, I was elated. Not only are my goodies covered, but I learned a new trick to share with my fashionista friends.

2. Rig your zipper to the button

If you can’t lock the zipper by pulling down the handle, it’s time to get extreme. You can use the hole in the end of the zipper handle and the button on your pants to secure the zipper in place. A metal key ring works well, since it’s sturdy. Simply attach the key ring to your zipper and slip it right over the button. Easy peasy.

If you don’t have a key ring handy, you could use almost anything. A looped, knotted piece of twine could work for example.
