Holiday Style Don’ts

November 23, 2006

I know it’s the season for holiday cheer, but some of my fellow shoppers tend to take dressing for the holidays one (or two, or three) steps too far.  You know who you are… you just can’t wait until the clock strikes 12 midnight on the Friday after thanksgiving, so you can finally wear your collection of Santa Claus tops and your children are still not speaking to you after you made the entire family dress like Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer for the family holiday card.

So put down the elf shoes you bought last year at Target and for the stake of all that is fashionable, DO NOT:

- wear bells on any clothing, shoes, handbags, etc.
- use the holiday season as the opportunity to dress in red from head to toe.
- wear a sweater that has any of the following applique: santas, christmas trees, snowflakes, snowmen, elves, etc
- decide to scratch your crafting itch by knitting everyone a Christmas sweater
- make a santa hat an integral part of your December wardrobe.
- wear elf ears instead of earrings
- sport a turtleneck top with prints of little christmas trees, leaves, elves, etc.
- overdose on corduroy pants (please, for all that is good and right in this world, resist the urge to wear the printed turtleneck WITH the corduroy pants)

Obviously someone doesn’t get into the holiday spirit.  Do you dress in black from head to toe during the holidays?  Hopefully you don’t have any children, because I could only imagine what kind of holiday experience they would have growing up.

Yeah, a NOT TACKY one.

Sheesh.

I agree with you.  You can be in the holiday spirit without looking like a box of wrapping paper exploded all over you.

Since when does wearing a ridiculous christmas sweaater equate being in the christmas spirit? And since when does liking the color black (which I love.. I also love the colors red, blue, and deep purple) mean that you not in the holiday spirit?

You’re telling me you can’t find a nice red sweater without bells on it? Or resist the urge to replace your normal winter hat with a santa everyday? You’re telling me my children would have a horrible christmas because I refuse to wear a sweater with bells on it? You’re off your knocker…

I thought the point of the holiday season was about giving, family, and love , not about wearing cordoury pants with turtlenecks with little christmas tree prints…

These things are okay for a holiday party- but not for everyday wear.  I’m sorry if you felt offended, but christmas sweaters with all the applique fixins’ , etc do look ridiculous on adults… Sorry, just a fact and most people are probably just afraid to tell you the truth.

Alli, I’m sorry to break it to you, but I wear black about 5 days a week, I think Christmas sweaters are damned silly on anyone over 3, and my son has a swell time every Christmas. But then, we’re not trying to have a “holiday experience,” just some fun at holiday time. Which we can do wearing normal clothes.

I do have some corduroy pants, TBF, but they’re black…didn’t realize these were a no-no. I figured black pants are black pants, as long as they weren’t mom jeans.

Cords can be okay.. just not with a christmas sweater and a turtleneck with little santas on it..
